Staff Software Engineer, Python

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Python based in Canada. This is a senior backend-focused engineering role responsible for shaping scalable data products and distributed systems. You will work across the stack, with roughly 70% of your time focused on backend and distributed systems and 20–30% on frontend development. Your work will directly influence the architecture, reliability, and scalability of data-intensive products and capabilities. You will help take emerging products from early traction to meaningful scale, making key technical decisions along the way. The role includes defining near-real-time data infrastructure, experimentation platforms, AI-powered workflows, and robust integration systems. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and data scientists, influencing both what gets built and how it is engineered. This is an opportunity for a technically strong generalist who enjoys solving ambiguous problems, mentoring engineers, and setting engineering direction in a fast-moving environment.

Architect and scale an incrementality product into a reliable, repeatable experimentation platform, owning the technical decisions required for long-term scalability. Define the technical direction for near-real-time data ingestion and processing as systems evolve beyond batch-oriented workflows. Establish patterns and frameworks for AI-powered workflows that help users evaluate performance and turn insights into actionable decisions. Lead the development of connection-state systems and partner ecosystem capabilities across data ingestion and exports. Shape technical approaches for adjacent product areas, including role-based access control and other cross-functional capabilities. Take complex product initiatives from ambiguous requirements through architecture, implementation, and production. Partner closely with Product, Design, and Data Science to influence product direction and translate business needs into scalable technical solutions. Make architectural decisions that account for reliability, maintainability, performance, and future scale. Contribute across backend, frontend, data pipelines, and infrastructure when required by the product. Mentor engineers, participate in design and architecture reviews, and raise the quality and technical standards of the engineering organization. Help improve engineering practices, team processes, and the overall effectiveness of technical delivery. Requirements 8+ years of experience designing and building distributed backend systems, microservices, APIs, and/or data processing systems using Python. Deep experience owning system architecture and making complex technical tradeoffs that emerge as systems scale. Proven ability to partner with Product Managers, Designers, and Data Scientists to shape product direction as well as technical implementation. Experience in a startup or similarly fast-paced environment requiring breadth, sound judgment, autonomy, and strong problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to transform ambiguous product requirements into robust technical architectures and production-ready solutions across multiple problem spaces. Strong ability to navigate complex datasets and interconnected data structures to investigate issues, trace dependencies, and determine effective solutions. Working experience with React and TypeScript; deep frontend specialization is not required. Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to use AI tools as development accelerators without relying on them in place of core engineering expertise. Generalist mindset with willingness to work across backend systems, frontend applications, data pipelines, and infrastructure. Strong understanding of data-intensive systems and distributed architectures. Experience mentoring engineers, conducting design reviews, and improving team engineering practices. Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous situations and take ownership of complex technical problems from start to finish. Benefits Remote position available in Canada. Base salary range of $190,000–$220,000 USD , with actual compensation varying based on experience, skills, and location. Equity package in addition to base compensation.
