Who is a student visa for?

A student visa is for a university or a college student studying in the UAE who has been accepted for full-time study.

What is an Entry Permit?

Admitted applicants who do not hold a UAE residence visa and who are not GCC or UAE citizens must apply for an AUS-sponsored student visa (Entry Permit). The Student Visa Request Form should be submitted at least two months prior to the admitted applicant's anticipated arrival to the UAE. Entering the UAE on a visit/tourist visa or visa upon arrival does not guarantee that you will be granted an AUS-sponsored student visa or a change of status.

What is the validity of the student Entry Permit?

The Student Entry permit is valid for ONLY 60 days from the date of issuance to enter the UAE, and it can be used in any UAE airport regardless of the point of origin.

How many times the Student Entry Permit can be used?

The Student Entry Permit is single-entry and can be used one time only.

What is the Residence Visa?

A Residence Visa is issued to a foreign national to allow them to reside legally in the UAE for a specified period, subject to the rules of the UAE immigration authorities.

Does AUS provide Residence Visas for its students?

Yes. AUS will assist Admitted applicants in applying for a UAE student visa, if needed, as per UAE government rules and regulations.

How long does it take AUS to issue the Entry Permit?

Entry Permit issuance is handled by UAE immigration authorities and may take between one and eight weeks. You should therefore submit the Student Visa Request Form early to allow AUS time to process and follow up on your application. Once the Entry Permit is issued, a scanned copy will be sent to your AUS email address.

Can I apply for a visa if my passport is valid for less than six months?

No. You need to make sure that your passport is valid for a minimum of six months.

Can I send my required visa documents by email?

We kindly request that all documents be submitted exclusively via email. Please send your documents to [email protected].

Is there a possibility that my visa will get rejected?

All student visa applications are reviewed and decided by the relevant UAE authorities. AUS has no control over and bears no responsibility for any visa rejections or delays.

What is the term of validity of the student’s residence visa?

New students are granted a two-year student visa for both Graduate and Undergraduate programs, renewable yearly based on the number of semesters remaining until graduation.

I am a local GCC citizen. Should I apply for an Entry Permit/Residence Visa in the UAE?

No. GCC citizens are currently exempt from obtaining an Entry Permit and Residence Visa to enter or reside in the UAE. You may enter using your GCC passport or national ID card.

Once you arrive in the UAE, please fill out the online Emirates ID Request Form and attach all required documents to process the request for your Emirates ID.

• personal photo: electronic versions of the photo files you received from the photo studio that meets ICP specifications. Please do not send scanned versions of hardcopy photos. The government will reject it.

I want to apply for a visit visa. Will AUS be able to provide a visit visa for students?

No. AUS does not sponsor visit visas. You must arrange your visit visa through a travel agency, airline or authorized UAE sponsor.

Can my family travel with me?

Yes, your family can travel with you. However, they cannot travel on your student visa and must obtain their own appropriate visas (e.g., visit, residence).

Can I sponsor my parents?

No. Students cannot sponsor family members on an AUS-sponsored student Residence Visa.

Can I work on my student visa?

No, Students are not permitted to engage in full-time or part-time employment while holding a student visa.

You may, however, undertake internships related to your field of study, subject to UAE regulations and prior approval from AUS. You must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from VES and comply with any additional requirements set by UAE authorities and your internship host.

How can I apply for a No Objection Letter?

Send an email to [email protected] with your request and include the following:

• The purpose of the No Objection Letter (issuing driving license, internship, letter to consulates, etc.)

• Copy of your passport and UAE ID/Residency Page

Note: for internship NOC, please provide confirmation from the school.

I already have a Residence Visa. Am I required to apply for a student visa?

If you already hold a valid UAE Residence Visa sponsored by a parent, employer or other sponsor, you may keep your current sponsor or transfer to AUS sponsorship, subject to UAE rules and your sponsor’s approval.

Admitted applicants holding UAE residency should contact the Office of Protocol and Security - Visa Section at [email protected] for guidance on procedures and required documents for visa transfer/change of sponsor (change of status).

In all cases, you must provide copies of your passport, current visa and Emirates ID to [email protected].

How to get an electronic copy of my Residency & Emirates ID?

Residency and Emirates ID details are now digital and can be accessed via the UAE PASS app (iOS and Android).

What are the VES department’s working hours?

VES office working hours are 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

walk-in/pick-up hours are Monday–Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or by appointment. For appointments or questions, please email [email protected].

Before You Arrive In The Uae

How do I apply for an Entry Permit if I am an international, non-resident applicant who is not a GCC national?

If you are an international, non-resident applicant who is not a GCC national and have been accepted to full-time study in an AUS undergraduate or graduate program, the university is able to provide you with a sponsored Student Residence Visa, enabling you to study and reside in the UAE.

You must apply for the Student Residence Visa before arriving to the UAE. The first step towards obtaining the Student Residence Visa is to apply for the Entry Permit.

How do I apply for an Entry Permit?

Step1. Complete the Student Visa Request Form.

Step 2. After we receive your documents, we will process your request and apply for the initial government approval of the Entry Permit.

Step 3. Once it is approved by the concerned UAE authorities, we will issue your Entry Permit and send it to your AUS email address.

You should use this permit to enter the UAE. The Entry Permit is valid for only 60 days from the date of issue. Once you have entered the UAE, your temporary visa will be valid only for 60 days from the date of entry.

Important Notes:

Complete Student Visa Request Form and provide the documents as soon as you receive your admission confirmation from the Office of Enrollment Management. Don’t book your flight to the UAE until you receive your Entry Permit.

After you arrive safely at AUS, you are kindly requested to notify [email protected] to complete the process of the Student Residence Visa.

• In order to process the Entry Permit, undergraduate students must pay the Seat Reservation Deposit. Please contact [email protected]. Admitted applicants to the master’s and PhD programs are not required to pay the seat reservation deposit.

• Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months before applying for the visa.

• When entering the UAE, you must use the same passport that was used for your Entry Permit application.

• Students should not apply for other visas for the UAE while AUS is processing their Entry Permit.

• Avoid entering the country on a visit/tourist visa or visa upon arrival, which will lead to additional visa cost and delays for the required change of status. If you find yourself in such a situation, please promptly contact [email protected] for assistance.

• If you enter using the Entry Permit and later leave the UAE before your residence visa is issued, you must complete the Student Residency Cancellation Form and contact VES (office M-M19, Mezzanine floor, Main Building).

I received a copy of my Student Entry Permit by email. What should I do?

You have to print a colored copy of your online visa and keep it with your passport.

When should I buy my flight ticket?

We advise purchasing your flight ticket only after your Entry Permit is issued. AUS holds no responsibility if you purchase your flight ticket and the visa is not ready by your travel date, as the issuance date of the visa is unpredictable.

Is there any process I should follow at the airport?

• Please ensure to keep a copy of your Entry Permit along with your passport.

• After entering the UAE, kindly email a scanned copy to [email protected] as it is required to finalize the residency process.

• Once you land in the airport, make sure that you buy a UAE SIM card from one of the providers available in the arrivals area. It is essential that you buy the SIM card before leaving the airport, as otherwise you will not be allowed to buy a UAE SIM card on your student visa. A UAE mobile number is mandatory for applying for the Emirates ID and completing your Residence Visa.

• If your nationality permits entry into the country on a visa upon arrival, ensure that you enter with an AUS-issued student visa.

How do I get a student residence visa for international students?

You may go to any municipality governmental clinic/health center in any emirate. You must have with you your passport, your Entry Permit or change of status proof, and a digital photo with white background and without glasses.

Note: If you are under 18 years old, you do not need to complete the test.

• your UAE mobile number

Step 4. For new residents, after the medical results are received, the student will need to complete the fingerprinting requirements for the Emirates ID card. The date and location for the fingerprinting process will be sent to you by email.

Step 5. Pay your visa fees. Visa fees will be added to your student account. Please contact [email protected] to settle the payment.

Step 6. UAE ID: You will receive an email that your ID is ready to pick it up from the VES office.

Note: Please make sure to always mention the AUS address as the delivery location so that we can track the delivery: PO Box 26666 Sharjah.

Step 7. To avoid late course registration, please send us a copy of your Emirates ID card to [email protected] along with [email protected].

What is fingerprinting (biometrics)?

For a new residents, after the medical result is out the student will need to complete the fingerprinting process at the nearest Emirates Identification Authority (EIDA).

One month before your visa expiry date, you will receive an email from VES stating that your visa is about to expire. Please check your AUS email regularly.

Step 3. Scan the following documents and send them to [email protected]:

• copy of your passport, valid for at least six months

• copy of your current visa

• copy of your current Emirates ID Card (front and back side)

• your updated digital personal that meets the ICP specifications

Can I change my visa status/ transfer my visa to AUS?

Yes, as long as you are an active enrolled student at AUS, you can change your status to an AUS student residence permit electronically with VES’ support, which makes it more convenient. You do not need to exit the UAE to change your visa status.

In which cases I should cancel my student visa?

Students should cancel their visa if they are no longer studying at AUS. If you graduate or withdraw from your studies, you must cancel your visa.

I am a graduating student. When should I cancel my visa?

As per UAE regulations, AUS-sponsored students are required to cancel their Student Visa after graduation. Since AUS diplomas can take an extended time to be processed before they are ready to be collected by the student, AUS keeps Student Visas active for 90 days from the date of graduation in order for students to collect their diploma and to explore other UAE visa options. I am outside the UAE with a valid student visa. I don’t plan to return to UAE. Will my visa be automatically cancelled?
