On 29 April, UCL Laws hosted its second Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, where PhD students were challenged to present their research in just three minutes, using a single static PowerPoint slide.
The competition highlighted the breadth of research being undertaken across UCL Laws’ PhD community, while encouraging researchers to communicate complex legal and societal issues in an accessible and engaging way.
The event took place online and featured presentations from four PhD students: Alessandro Di Stefano, Mario Guido, Dmitry Kolomeets, and Enzo Rebelo.
Presentations were judged by Orla Lynskey, Jeevan Hariharan, Karen Scott and Sarah Campling. Audience members attending the event were also invited to vote for their favourite presentation.
Mario Guido, with a presentation entitled ‘Returning Once and For All: Building a ‘Fair’ Private Prison Labour System’, was judged to be the winner of the competition by the panel of judges.
Alessandro Di Stefano was named the panel’s runner-up with his presentation ‘Who and what do we make places for? An exploration of contractualised planning decision-making processes in England’.
Mario and Alessandro were also the respective winner and runner-up of the audience vote, and both will now be representing Laws in the 2026 UCL ‘3 Minute Thesis’ competition taking place on 10 June.
UCL Laws Director of Research Studies, Professor Ilanah Fhima, said:
“It was great to see the diversity of research being conducted at UCL Laws presented in such an engaging way that highlighted its social importance. Thanks to the attendees and judges, but most of all to our PhD researchers who stepped outside their comfort zone to share their important research. Congratulations to all participants, particularly Mario Guido and to the runner-up, Alessandro di Stefano.”
