Marshall Islands nationals are among the invited applicants for UNESCO’s 2026 Keizo Obuchi research fellowship cycle, which offers 10 research fellowships in Japan worth up to US$10,000 for three to nine months.

The 2026 cycle supports postgraduate research stays at Japanese universities or research institutions in heritage conservation and management, sustainable development, and artificial-intelligence themes aligned with UNESCO’s mandate. The research stay must begin from February 2027 onward and be completed by December 2027. Applications are routed through the applicant’s home-country National Commission for UNESCO; candidates are advised to submit to the National Commission at least two weeks before UNESCO’s 30 September deadline.
Eligibility requirements
Applicant must be a national of an invited Member State such as the Marshall Islands, be no more than 40 years old at application, hold at least a Master’s degree or equivalent relevant to the proposed research, have sufficient language proficiency for the host institution, and have acceptance from an academic supervisor at a Japanese university or research institution.
