Ten UNESCO/Japan fellowships of 3–9 months support postgraduate research in Japan in heritage, sustainable development and artificial-intelligence-related themes.

Cycle 2026 is open. Each fellowship may provide up to USD 10,000 as a lump-sum contribution for an approved research stay in Japan from February 2027 onward, ending no later than December 2027. Eligible costs may include international and domestic travel, accommodation, medical insurance, personal subsistence and research-related expenses. Equatorial Guinea and Eritrea are among the invited African Member States.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be nationals of an invited Member State or Associate Member, be no more than 40 years old at application, hold at least a master’s degree or equivalent relevant to the proposed research, have sufficient host-institution language proficiency, and obtain acceptance from a supervisor at a Japanese university or research institution. Applications require nomination through the applicant’s National Commission for UNESCO.

Candidates are instructed to contact their National Commission and submit locally at least two weeks earlier; national deadlines may therefore be earlier.
