The University of Iceland is seeking a PhD researcher for the three-year ICE-MELT project on Holocene magma evolution and eruption timing at Langjökull, examining links between glacial retreat and volcanic activity.

The 70–75% doctoral position combines fieldwork, geological mapping, sample preparation, petrological and geochemical analysis, paleomagnetic dating, data analysis and scientific writing. Planned work includes sampling and mapping around the Prestahnúkur and Hveravellir volcanic systems near Langjökull. The project uses paleomagnetism, petrology, geochemistry and physical volcanology to constrain eruption ages, magma storage and eruptive style.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants need a master's degree in geophysics, geology or a closely related field completed by the start date, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, strong English communication skills and capacity to present research internationally. Experience in rock magnetism and/or geochemistry is an advantage. Appointment is conditional on formal University of Iceland PhD admission.
