​Volunteerism has long been an integral part of AKU’s identity, grounded in our core values of service, compassion, and civic responsibility. Over the years, we have had the privilege of welcoming thousands of dedicated individuals from around the world who have generously contributed their time, knowledge, and expertise to support our mission. Their contributions have created meaningful and far-reaching impact across the communities we serve.

Volunteers represent diverse backgrounds and commit varying numbers of hours based on programme needs and assignment scope. Since the launch of the University’s Volunteer Services Programme in 1987, more than 14,000 volunteers have served globally across regions in healthcare, education, research, and administration.

AKU Volunteer Programme

The Volunteer Programme offers individuals the opportunity to contribute to the University’s strategic priorities across Pakistan, East Africa (Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania), United Kingdom and Afghanistan. It positions volunteerism as a catalyst for learning, innovation, and community impact. We offer two primary streams for volunteer engagement:

1. Student & Community Volunteers


Individuals currently students or members of the community, willing to volunteer their time in support of administrative tasks, events, outreach activities, or community‑based projects. These roles are ideal for those looking to learn, contribute, and gain exposure.

2. Professional Volunteers

Individuals with specialized skills, qualifications, or professional experience, volunteering their expertise for technical, advisory, training, or capacity‑building assignments. These assignments require subject-matter expertise and play a critical role in enhancing institutional impact.

Application Process

Individuals interested in volunteering with AKU may submit their applications to the Office of Volunteer Services. All applications are reviewed against the following minimum requirements:

Eligibility Criteria

• Age: 18–55 years

• Education: Minimum High School completion (Grade 12 – Intermediate or A-Levels)

• Health Requirements: Medically fit. Medical health insurance or medical clearance (as applicable for certain regions/departments)

• Communication Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal abilities

• Motivation: High level of motivation with a strong humanitarian mindset

• Collaboration: Flexibility and willingness to work effectively in a team

• Commitment: Willingness to contribute time and/or expertise for the benefit of the community

Selection Process

Eligible candidates are screened and shortlisted based on alignment with the University’s priorities and requirements. Shortlisted applicants are invited for an interview or meeting to understand applicant’s background, interests, and availability, provide detailed information about the assignment scope, responsibilities, and expectations and assess suitability based on skills, availability, and alignment with the role. Final selection is made to ensure the best possible match between the volunteer and the assignment.

Code of Conduct

All volunteers are expected to comply with the Code of Conduct of the Institution and maintain a professional standard of behavior at all times.

Facilities

The department supports volunteers by providing economy lunch coupons during their engagement.

Recognition and Rewards

We value and recognise the contributions of our volunteers. Upon completing defined service milestones, volunteers are acknowledged through appreciation letters and recognition awards.
