Overview

Doctoral students in anthropology worldwide can apply for up to US$25,000 for dissertation or thesis field research through the Wenner-Gren Foundation's 1 November 2026 funding round.

Complete grant details

The Dissertation Fieldwork Grant supports doctoral or thesis research that advances anthropological knowledge across socio-cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology and equivalent fields. The maximum grant is US$25,000 and is nonrenewable. For the 1 November deadline, proposed project start dates must fall between 1 July and 31 December of the following year. The Foundation states that the application portal opens two months before the deadline. Eligible project costs may include research travel, living expenses during fieldwork, childcare, research assistance, transcription, software, visa fees, participant/community compensation and justified supplies or equipment. Institutional overhead and grant-administration fees are not funded.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must be doctoral students enrolled in anthropology, or in a related doctoral field with a strong anthropology affiliation through advisors or prior degrees. Qualified students of any nationality or institutional affiliation may apply. A dissertation advisor or another scholar from the same institution must supervise the project. Before an award can begin, the applicant must have completed all doctoral requirements other than the dissertation or thesis. Existing Wenner-Gren award requirements must be complete, and applicants may have only one Wenner-Gren submission under consideration at a time.

Tips for this grant

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. For the November round, choose a project start date between 1 July and 31 December of the following year.
  2. Prepare both best-case and worst-case budgets with the same total request.
  3. Do not submit transcripts, reference letters or extra materials unless the Foundation requests them.
  4. Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
  5. Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
  6. Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
  7. Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.

Verification notes

Verified on the Wenner-Gren Foundation's current program page, eligibility text and application guide. The program lists recurring 1 May and 1 November deadlines and says the portal opens two months before the deadline. No closing clock time is stated, so deadline_date is used. The US$25,000 figure is a maximum award, not a guaranteed amount.
