Full Job Description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering is a leading-edge product development team that creates enterprise compute and storage server designs for our innovative web service and e-commerce technology platforms. Our designs are industry-leading in terms of performance, frugality, and operational excellence, and are critical to the success of the AWS business and the hundreds of thousands of customers who use utility computing today. We are seeking experienced Thermal/Mechanical Engineers to build the next generation of our cloud platforms. Our success depends on our truly innovative server infrastructure; we’re handling massive scale and rapid integration of emergent technologies.

What you will do: As a member of the Hardware Engineering Mechanical/Thermal/Reliability (MTR) Component Engineering team you’ll be responsible for the design of our rack sub-systems. You’ll provide leadership in the application of new mechanical technologies to large scale server deployments in a continuous effort to deliver a world-class customer experience. This is a fast-paced, challenging position, and you’ll work with thought leaders in multiple technology areas. You’ll have relentlessly high standards for yourself and everyone you work with, and you’ll be constantly looking for ways to improve your products performance, quality and cost. You’ll need to understand when a change in technology enables a completely different way of approaching design. We’re changing an industry, and we want team members who are ready for this challenge and want to reach beyond what is possible today.

Why it matters: AWS Global Cloud Infrastructure is the most secure, extensive, and reliable cloud platform, offering over 200 fully featured services from data centers globally. Whether customers need to deploy application workloads across the globe in a single click, or want to build and deploy specific applications closer to end-users with single-digit millisecond latency, AWS provides the cloud infrastructure where and when its needed. With millions of active customers and tens of thousands of partners globally, AWS has the largest and most dynamic ecosystem. Customers across virtually every industry and of every size, including start-ups, enterprises, and public sector organizations, are running every imaginable use case on AWS. We continually need to deploy newer, innovative, and more efficient and cost effective hardware. Your work will drive efficiency and significant cost savings while improving the performance and reliability of our websites and services. Your work will touch development teams and customers around the world.

You will demonstrate a working knowledge of mechanical and thermal systems, with experience in systems integration of complex server products. You’ll have the desire to learn from new challenges and the problem solving and communication skills to work within a highly interactive and experienced team. Candidates must show a hands-on passion for their work and be able to communicate their ideas and concepts both verbally, and visually. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to integrate feedback and to respond quickly to changing contexts and work environments.

Key job responsibilities In this role, you will:

  • Perform mechanical design and development for rack sub-systems and associated components (frame, rails, chassis, air dams, sesimic brackets, stabilizers, blanking panels)
  • Validate subsystems and components meet NPI program requirements
  • Participate in the cross-discipline design process working with other HW and SW team members to develop optimized integrated solutions
  • Conduct failure analysis and solution validation
  • Manage interaction with overseas resources
  • Provide mentorship and technical reviews to a team of mechanical/thermal design engineers

A day in the life The average week is a mixture of using engineering tools (CAD and thermal simulation), data analysis, meetings (internal and vendors), test report reviews, design reviews, and communicating via tickets or emails to make design and project decisions.

About the team This team is responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of mechanical components that enable high-performance, large-scale data center systems. Engineers work as primary owners of their components, partnering closely with suppliers and manufacturing teams to ensure solutions perform reliably from initial development through deployment in the field. Our mission is to deliver highly reliable, scalable solutions that support increasingly demanding compute workloads. This includes solving challenges related to performance and long-term operation in real-world data center environments. Engineers develop deep expertise in their component domains, enabling more effective design reviews, targeted validation strategies, and rapid resolution of issues observed during development and in production systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 2 years experience in thermal and mechanical design of server technologies or equivalent technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 6 years experience in thermal and mechanical design of server technologies or equivalent technology
  • Experience with the project management of technical projects
  • Experience with thermal analysis tools such as CFD (e.g., Flotherm, ANSYS Icepak, or similar)
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo/ProE)
