This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Complex Claim Specialist, Excess & Surplus based in United States. The Complex Claim Specialist will manage complex commercial general liability claims across both litigated and non-litigated matters within the Excess & Surplus insurance space. This role requires strong technical claims expertise, sophisticated coverage analysis, and the ability to identify and evaluate risk transfer opportunities. You will oversee investigations, experts, legal counsel, negotiations, reserving, and resolution strategies to achieve strong overall outcomes. The position combines independent claim ownership with frequent interaction across internal and external stakeholders. Success requires sound judgment, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to communicate complex exposures clearly and effectively. The role reports to senior claims leadership and may involve periodic travel for mediations, trials, and related meetings.
Handle complex commercial general liability claims across both litigated and non-litigated matters, maintaining ownership of claims from investigation through resolution. Identify potential exposures and ensure claims are reserved appropriately, accurately, and in a timely manner. Evaluate insurance coverage issues and identify opportunities for effective risk transfer based on applicable policies and contractual obligations. Ensure thorough investigation of underlying facts and circumstances, engaging and managing appropriate experts when required. Evaluate the selection and utilization of legal counsel and ensure litigation strategies are appropriate for the circumstances of each claim. Develop and execute effective negotiation strategies designed to achieve the best overall outcome for each claim. Formulate comprehensive resolution strategies by balancing coverage, liability, damages, litigation, contractual, and financial considerations. Communicate claim exposures, risks, developments, and recommended actions effectively with internal stakeholders and external parties. Build and maintain professional relationships with attorneys, insureds, brokers, experts, and other parties involved in the claims process. Attend mediations, trials, and other claim-related meetings as required, including periodic travel. Maintain accurate and timely claim documentation and comply with applicable claims procedures, licensing requirements, and regulatory expectations. Perform additional claims-related duties and responsibilities as required. Requirements: Bring at least 5 years of experience handling or litigating commercial general liability claims. Demonstrate strong contractual analysis capabilities, including the ability to interpret insurance policies for coverage and analyze other contracts for risk transfer obligations and opportunities. Possess advanced technical claims knowledge and a strong understanding of relevant legal principles and practices. Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex claims issues and exposures. Be comfortable interacting professionally and effectively with internal and external stakeholders at a senior level. Demonstrate the ability to influence and negotiate effectively while maintaining productive professional relationships. Possess strong negotiation and conflict-resolution skills and the judgment to determine appropriate claim strategies. Have strong computer skills and the ability to work effectively within paperless claims management systems and related technology. Hold any adjuster licenses required for the applicable jurisdiction. A Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation or Associate in Claims (AIC) certification is preferred. Demonstrate sound judgment, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to independently manage complex claims. Be willing to travel periodically for mediations, trials, and other business-related meetings.
