Full job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Contractor - Mechanical Engineer 4 (NSSS Vessels & Structures) based in the United States. As a Mechanical Engineer 4 specializing in Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) vessels and structures, you will perform advanced design and stress analyses for pressure vessels and primary equipment supports used in modular advanced light water reactor systems. You will apply your expertise in finite element analysis and nuclear engineering standards to ensure component integrity, safety, and regulatory compliance. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you will evaluate pressure, mechanical, and thermal loads while optimizing component designs. You will also provide technical leadership, mentor fellow engineers, and help resolve complex engineering challenges. Your work will follow rigorous nuclear quality assurance requirements and applicable U.S. regulatory guidelines. This fully remote contract opportunity is expected to continue through 2027, offering experienced engineers the chance to contribute to technically demanding nuclear engineering projects.

As a senior technical contributor within the NSSS Component Engineering organization, you will lead component analysis activities, ensure compliance with applicable engineering codes, and support high-quality design decisions. Your responsibilities will include: Perform and document structural and stress analyses of pressure vessels and primary equipment supports in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section III. Evaluate components under pressure, mechanical, and thermal loading conditions, including primary stress, primary-plus-secondary stress intensity ranges, and fatigue. Use ANSYS finite element analysis software and CAD tools to assess component performance, support engineering decisions, and optimize designs. Interpret project scope, technical requirements, design specifications, and applicable industry standards and regulations. Ensure engineering evaluations comply with relevant ASME Section III requirements, including Subsection NB and/or NF, as well as applicable regulatory guidelines. Provide technical leadership and engineering oversight for the NSSS Component Analysis Group, taking responsibility for results and technical quality. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers, support their professional development, and maintain relevant training and technical qualifications. Collaborate with colleagues and multidisciplinary engineering teams to coordinate design activities, resolve technical issues, and ensure effective project execution. Communicate complex technical findings clearly to management, senior stakeholders, and other engineering disciplines. Apply nuclear quality assurance requirements, including ASME NQA-1, 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix B, and 10 CFR Part 21. Manage project tasks, timelines, and competing priorities independently while maintaining accuracy, dependability, and a strong safety culture. Adapt to evolving project needs and perform additional engineering duties as required. Requirements: The ideal candidate is an experienced mechanical or engineering professional with extensive knowledge of nuclear component analysis, advanced stress-analysis methods, and industry-specific codes. The following qualifications are required or preferred as indicated: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, from a four-year ABET-accredited college or university. Professional experience: At least 10 years of relevant full-time engineering experience. Finite element analysis: Extensive hands-on experience using ANSYS to perform stress analysis in accordance with ASME BPVC Section III, Subsection NB and/or NF. Nuclear engineering standards: Detailed knowledge of applicable industry codes, standards, regulations, and nuclear quality assurance requirements. Technical expertise: Strong understanding of pressure vessel and equipment support design, structural integrity, and the evaluation of mechanical and thermal loads. Programming skills: Experience with engineering programming tools such as ANSYS APDL, MATLAB, or Python is desirable. Technical leadership: Ability to lead engineering activities, provide technical direction, mentor colleagues, and take ownership of technical outcomes. Problem-solving: Strong analytical judgment and the ability to develop innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interpret technical documentation and explain complex findings to diverse stakeholders. Project management: Strong planning, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage large projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Collaboration: Ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines, build productive professional relationships, and coordinate technical activities. Adaptability and dependability: Ability to manage competing demands, respond constructively to changing priorities, and maintain consistent performance. Quality and safety: Commitment to nuclear safety culture and compliance with quality assurance regulations and standards, including ASME NQA-1, 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix B, and 10 CFR Part 21. Work eligibility: Must be eligible to work under U.S. Department of Energy regulations in 10 CFR Part 810. Preferred credentials: An advanced engineering degree and Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification are preferred. Benefits: Contract duration: Anticipated to continue through 2027. Work schedule: Full-time contract assignment of 40 hours per week. Remote flexibility: Remote work available within the contiguous United States. Travel: National and local travel as required by business needs. Technical impact: Opportunity to contribute advanced engineering expertise to complex nuclear reactor component design and analysis projects. Professional development: Opportunities to mentor other engineers and strengthen technical leadership capabilities. Salary, healthcare, paid time off, retirement benefits, and other compensation details are not specified in the source description.
