Overview This role offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a trusted financial advisor to small and medium-sized businesses, helping owners make informed decisions that support growth, profitability, and compliance. As a Controller, you will provide strategic financial guidance, oversee accounting quality, and translate complex financial information into actionable business insights. You will collaborate closely with accountants, bookkeepers, and financial leadership to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality financial services tailored to each client's needs. The position combines hands-on accounting expertise with client relationship management, financial analysis, and operational strategy. You will help businesses strengthen their financial processes, interpret performance indicators, and navigate budgets, forecasts, and evolving business challenges. Working in a remote-first environment, you will contribute to continuous improvement, technology adoption, and collaborative initiatives that enhance service delivery. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys building trusted relationships, coaching others, and making a measurable impact on business performance.

Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted financial advisor for assigned clients, leading financial review meetings and providing strategic recommendations. Guide clients and internal accounting professionals through complex accounting matters, financial reporting decisions, and compliance considerations. Analyze financial statements, key performance indicators, budgets, and forecasts to identify risks, opportunities, and strategies for improving profitability and growth. Monitor client engagement health, anticipate evolving financial needs, and recommend additional resources or services when appropriate. Collaborate with Senior Accountants, Staff Accountants, Bookkeepers, and CFOs to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality accounting deliverables. Provide technical accounting expertise and guidance on complex financial matters, helping teams maintain consistency, accuracy, and compliance. Support workflow coordination, workload prioritization, and resource planning in collaboration with leadership. Promote a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented team culture by sharing knowledge, coaching colleagues, and communicating best practices. Identify and implement process improvements that increase operational efficiency while maintaining strong accounting controls and compliance standards. Contribute to training materials, process documentation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that strengthen team capabilities and service quality. Participate in internal strategic projects and initiatives designed to address evolving client needs and support business growth. Stay informed about accounting standards, tax practices, small-business economic trends, and emerging financial technologies to continuously improve client service. Monitor utilization, staffing, and engagement profitability to support efficient resource allocation and sustainable service delivery. Requirements A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field is preferred. Approximately 6–8 years of progressive accounting experience, with demonstrated expertise in controller-level responsibilities. Strong ability to interpret financial statements, analyze KPIs, evaluate budgets and forecasts, and communicate financial insights in practical business terms. Thorough understanding of month-end and year-end financial close processes, accounting best practices, and financial reporting requirements. Proficiency with accounting and business platforms such as QuickBooks Online, Fathom, Shopify, Cin7, and Amazon. Experience advising small businesses, ideally in inventory-based retail, e-commerce, creative or project-based businesses, or technology startups. Familiarity with accounting and tax methodologies, small-business financial management, and relevant economic trends. Demonstrated ability to manage resource utilization, staffing requirements, and client engagement profitability. Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to guide accounting teams and foster high performance without direct supervisory authority. A proven track record of delivering excellent client service, building trusted relationships, and providing strategic financial guidance to business owners. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement. Ability to work independently in a remote-first environment while collaborating effectively with distributed teams and using virtual communication tools. A dedicated home office and availability that aligns with core collaboration hours and business needs. Willingness to travel occasionally for company-wide events and business meetings, with flexibility outside standard working hours when required. Legal authorization to work in the United States. Due to employment and tax compliance restrictions, applicants residing in California, New York, Illinois, or Oregon are not eligible for this position.
