Full job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a DevOps Engineer (Vac DST) based in Canada. Join a distributed systems testing team dedicated to evaluating the performance, scalability, and reliability of advanced decentralized technologies. In this role, you will design and optimize Kubernetes infrastructure for large-scale experiments and performance benchmarks. You will build automated deployment workflows and strengthen observability to make complex testing environments more reliable and reproducible. Working closely with researchers and engineers, you will investigate distributed system behaviors and turn technical findings into actionable improvements. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to open-source technologies supporting privacy, digital freedom, and decentralized peer-to-peer networks. If you enjoy solving complex infrastructure challenges and improving the performance of distributed systems, this role offers a technically challenging environment with meaningful impact.

As a DevOps Engineer, you will build and maintain the infrastructure needed to test distributed systems at scale, working closely with researchers and development teams to improve experimentation, performance analysis, and operational reliability. Design, configure, and optimize Kubernetes clusters for large-scale experiments and benchmarking of peer-to-peer technologies. Improve cluster scalability, resource utilization, and infrastructure efficiency to support increasingly complex deployments. Deploy, maintain, and optimize monitoring, logging, and observability solutions, including Grafana, Prometheus, and Loki. Collaborate with distributed systems researchers and engineers to streamline experimentation workflows and make results easier to analyze and reproduce. Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration, and deployment processes to improve reliability and reduce operational overhead. Troubleshoot, profile, and tune distributed workloads to ensure accurate, consistent, and high-performance benchmarks. Identify, reproduce, and debug complex distributed systems issues in collaboration with development teams. Translate technical observations and benchmarking data into practical recommendations for improving system performance and reliability. Requirements: The ideal candidate combines strong DevOps and infrastructure engineering skills with a solid understanding of Linux, networking, and distributed systems. You should be comfortable automating complex environments, investigating technical issues, and communicating findings clearly across multidisciplinary teams. Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration in production or research environments. Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, Linux systems, and networking, particularly in distributed and peer-to-peer environments. Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and VictoriaLogs. Experience with infrastructure-as-code and deployment tools, including Terraform, Ansible, or Helm. Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language, ideally Python. Interest in or experience with distributed systems, peer-to-peer networks, or blockchain technologies. Experience with networking and systems programming. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams. Alignment with principles centered on privacy, digital liberties, decentralization, and open technology. Bonus Qualifications: Hands-on experience with libp2p or projects within decentralized technology communities. Background in performance benchmarking, scalability testing, or systems research. Contributions to open-source projects. Previous experience working with an open-source organization. Benefits: Remote work opportunity with a worldwide team. Opportunity to contribute to open-source infrastructure and decentralized technologies. Exposure to complex distributed systems, large-scale Kubernetes deployments, and performance research. Collaborative environment working alongside engineers, researchers, and technical specialists. Compensation expectations are collected during the application process; a specific salary range and additional benefits are not disclosed in the listing. Candidates are asked whether they would consider receiving part of their compensation in cryptocurrency; this is a preference question, not a stated requirement.
