Full job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Finance, Care in Action based in the United States. The Director of Finance will lead financial management and oversight across a nonprofit advocacy organization and its affiliated entities. Reporting to the VP of Finance, this role will oversee budgeting, financial reporting, treasury management, audits, grants compliance, and financial governance. The successful candidate will help ensure accurate financial operations across a 501(c)(4), a political action committee (PAC), and related organizations. Working closely with senior leadership, the board, development, accounting, and legal and compliance teams, the Director will support informed decision-making and long-term financial sustainability. This position also serves as Board Treasurer and primary contact for external auditors. The ideal candidate brings strong nonprofit finance expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly. This is a full-time, remote opportunity for a mission-driven finance leader committed to advancing dignity, equality, and justice for domestic and care workers.

Budget Management and Financial Reporting Lead key aspects of the annual budgeting process, support program budget development, and provide budget-versus-actual reports, income projections, and updates on funding deliverables. Prepare timely financial packages for the organization and affiliated entities, ensuring monthly close is completed by the 15th and reports are finalized by the 20th. Ensure accurate revenue and expense coding, review monthly revenue classifications, reconcile revenue with the Development team, and track restricted funding releases. Maintain and update the chart of accounts, prepare payroll coding sheets, upload journal entries, and coordinate payroll allocation updates with Legal and Compliance. Expense Approvals and Treasury Management Review and approve expenses, invoices, and staff reimbursements across the organization and affiliated entities, using Bill.com as required. Support treasury activities, including investment management, disbursement approvals, cash flow oversight, and maintaining appropriate cash balances. Authorize fund transfers for electoral work advances, track PAC prepayments and drawdowns, and approve intercompany charges. Ensure accounts are closed accurately and on schedule each month. Grants and Development Support Partner with the Development team to coordinate grant applications, documentation, reimbursements, and audit requirements. Support restricted grant proposals and financial reporting, including reviewing deliverables tracked in Salesforce. Audit and Compliance Serve as the primary contact for external auditors during annual audits. Update and implement financial policies and procedures to strengthen compliance, consistency, and operational efficiency. Ensure consistent application of financial handbooks and manuals across relevant entities. Board and Leadership Engagement Prepare and present financial updates and budget materials to the board, and participate in meetings with organizational management and board members. Provide financial insights to the Executive Director and leadership team to support planning and organizational financial health. Serve as Board Treasurer. Affiliate Financial Management Oversee the accuracy and compliance of day-to-day accounting processes across the organization and affiliated entities. Prepare financial reports and support entity-level reporting, intercompany transactions, and cost allocations. Requirements Required Qualifications At least 5 years of progressive financial management experience within nonprofit organizations. For-profit experience alone does not satisfy this requirement. Direct, hands-on financial management experience with a 501(c)(4) organization, including its distinct compliance and reporting obligations. Experience overseeing finances across multiple related nonprofit entities, such as a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC, including intercompany transactions, cost allocations, and entity-level reporting. Demonstrated ability to prepare, analyze, and present financial statements, budget-versus-actual reports, and cash flow projections. Strong knowledge of restricted and unrestricted fund accounting, grant financial reporting, and nonprofit revenue recognition. Experience managing audits and working directly with external auditors. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to financial accuracy. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex financial information to non-finance colleagues and board members. Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with a distributed team. Alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent credential is an advantage. Experience managing PAC finances and reporting. Proficiency with Financial Edge (Blackbaud) accounting software. Experience using Martus or comparable budgeting tools. Familiarity with Divvy, Bill.com, Expensify, or similar expense management platforms. Experience using Salesforce for grant tracking and reporting. Previous experience coordinating with a Board of Directors. Demonstrated commitment to racial, economic, and gender justice. A tailored resume and cover letter are expected as part of the application. Benefits Annual salary: $110,000–$120,000. Full-time, remote work within the United States, with flexibility and in-person attendance as required. Opportunity to contribute financial leadership to a mission-driven organization focused on domestic and care workers’ rights, dignity, and equality. Collaboration with senior leadership, board members, and cross-functional teams on organizational strategy, governance, and financial sustainability.
