Full job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Risk based in United States. This is a senior risk leadership opportunity focused on building and scaling a comprehensive risk function within a fast-growing technology environment. You will design the risk framework, establish governance standards, and oversee first-line credit and fraud operations. The role combines strategic risk management with hands-on partnership across Product, Engineering, Sales, Finance, Legal, and Compliance. You will translate risk policies into product controls, automation, reporting, and actionable business decisions. The position requires balancing disciplined risk management with commercial growth while maintaining strong executive and board-level communication. This is a high-ownership role for an experienced risk leader who thrives in a builder-strategist environment.

Build and own the risk tolerance framework, including delinquency guardrails, fraud targets, escalation thresholds, and other measures that guide business decisions. Establish second-line risk governance and define areas requiring Risk approval before implementation, including credit policy changes, fraud controls, and risk-bearing product features. Establish and lead the Risk Committee, including meeting cadence, reporting packages, escalation protocols, and communication with executive leadership. Govern first-line credit and fraud operations, providing leadership and developing the capabilities and analytical rigor of the teams reporting into the function. Partner directly with Product and Engineering to translate risk policies into product logic, application-stage controls, automated decisioning, and other embedded risk capabilities. Collaborate with Sales to establish and maintain appropriate risk appetite and commercial guardrails while supporting responsible business growth. Partner with Legal and Compliance on regulatory requirements, including BSA/AML, UDAAP, and card-issuing compliance. Translate operational risk indicators into clear financial and business insights for Finance, executive leadership, and board-level audiences. Build and maintain risk reporting infrastructure, including quarterly reporting on delinquency, fraud rates, and performance against established targets. Continuously evolve the risk framework, governance processes, and reporting capabilities as the business and product portfolio scale. Requirements: 8–10+ years of professional experience in risk management, with significant experience in credit; combined credit and fraud experience is preferred. At least 3 years of experience leading teams and developing risk professionals or operational functions. Demonstrated ability to balance rigorous risk management with business growth, with specific experience establishing appropriate controls without unnecessarily restricting commercial activity. Direct experience partnering with Product and Engineering teams to translate risk policies into product decisions, automated controls, and operational processes. Strong cross-functional influence and communication skills, particularly when navigating risk appetite and growth considerations with Sales and Product stakeholders. Familiarity with regulatory requirements including BSA/AML, UDAAP, and card-issuing compliance. Excellent executive communication skills, with the ability to translate complex risk signals into clear business and financial language while maintaining analytical precision. Experience in fintech, card issuing, lending, or a closely related financial services environment is required. FRM, CPA, or CFE certification is a plus. Strong analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to establish frameworks and make informed decisions in a rapidly evolving environment. Comfortable operating with significant ownership and ambiguity while building new capabilities and governance structures from the ground up. Benefits: Base salary range of $171,000–$202,000 USD. Equity provided to all employees. Potential annual bonus depending on role and eligibility. Competitive compensation based on experience, expertise, location, and role. Comprehensive benefits package. Hybrid-hub model designed to support both office-based and fully remote work depending on role and location. Work environment and resources designed to support employee success. Opportunities to take significant ownership in building and scaling a new risk function. Perks and benefits may vary based on employment type, location, and other factors.
