Altom Transport is hiring a Dispatcher to coordinate the safe, reliable transportation of hazardous materials in liquid bulk tank trailers. As a family-owned company in business since 1948, we provide specialized transportation services for the chemical and petroleum industries.

In this role, you will manage daily dispatch, support drivers, coordinate customer appointments, and keep shipments moving safely and efficiently. We’re looking for someone who understands tanker operations, communicates clearly, and can adjust plans quickly when schedules change.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatch drivers and liquid bulk tankers for chemical, petroleum, and other hazardous materials shipments.
  • Plan loads around driver availability, hours of service, equipment readiness, and customer pickup and delivery appointments.
  • Match shipments with appropriately qualified drivers and approved tanker equipment, confirming product and equipment requirements with operations and safety personnel.
  • Coordinate tank washes, cleaning documentation, prior cargo information, and trailer readiness between loads.
  • Communicate load instructions, appointment details, delivery requirements, and schedule changes to drivers and customers.
  • Monitor shipment progress and resolve delays, breakdowns, missed appointments, and last-minute changes.
  • Maintain accurate information in the transportation management system, including load details, shipment status, delivery documents, and accessorial charges.
  • Improve fleet utilization and reduce empty miles while maintaining safe, practical dispatch schedules.
  • Escalate shipping document discrepancies, product compatibility concerns, incidents, and unsafe conditions promptly.

Requirements

  • Previous experience dispatching hazmat liquid bulk tanker shipments.

  • Understanding of chemical or petroleum transportation, tank cleaning requirements, and tanker equipment suitability.

  • Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA requirements, driver hours of service, and electronic logging devices.

  • Experience using transportation management systems, dispatch software, spreadsheets, and email.

  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple shipments and changing priorities.

  • Clear, professional communication with drivers, customers, and internal teams.

  • Sound judgment and a commitment to safety, service, and teamwork.

  • Availability to work the posted schedule and complete required hazmat and safety training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating both company drivers and owner-operators.
  • Familiarity with customer loading and unloading procedures, tank wash facilities, and regional route planning.
