Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Electrical Engineer based in the United States. Join a team dedicated to delivering reliable electricity while supporting the transition toward a more sustainable energy future. As an Electrical Engineer, you will provide technical expertise across a diverse portfolio of utility-scale solar, wind, and natural gas power generation assets. You will help maintain operational reliability, improve electrical safety, investigate equipment failures, and optimize protection systems across the fleet. Working alongside operations teams and technical specialists, you will contribute to regulatory compliance, maintenance strategies, and the restoration of critical equipment following electrical events. You will also support new development and acquisition activities by evaluating electrical infrastructure and identifying potential operational risks. This remote opportunity offers a broad technical scope for an engineer who enjoys solving complex power system challenges and continuously expanding their expertise.
In this role, you will provide engineering support across power generation operations, focusing on system protection, electrical safety, equipment reliability, regulatory compliance, and technical problem-solving. You will collaborate with site personnel, contractors, and cross-functional teams to improve asset performance, prevent recurring incidents, and ensure electrical systems operate safely and reliably. Event diagnosis and root cause analysis: Analyze plant trips and electrical events using relay records, COMTRADE files, and operational reports. Identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and provide real-time technical support to restore equipment availability. Outage and field support: Provide on-site engineering support during outages, oversee contractors performing electrical work, and help resolve technical issues as they arise. System protection: Develop and optimize protective relay settings, review third-party settings and protection-and-control designs, and recommend relay upgrades. Power system studies: Perform short-circuit, load-flow, protection coordination, and other electrical studies using ETAP or comparable engineering software. Electrical safety: Conduct arc-flash hazard analyses, recommend mitigation measures, optimize protection settings to reduce incident energy where practical, and review switching, isolation, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. Maintenance and reliability: Develop contingency plans for critical equipment, including main power transformers and high-voltage breakers. Review maintenance scopes, inspection findings, and test results, and recommend improvements. Operational troubleshooting: Assist site teams in diagnosing transformer alarms, relay alarms, breaker problems, and other electrical issues affecting plant operations. NERC and regulatory compliance: Perform applicable NERC studies and assessments, including PRC-019, PRC-024, PRC-025, PRC-027, PRC-002, and PRC-028 requirements. Compliance investigations and reporting: Review power system events for protection misoperations and unexpected output changes under PRC-004 and PRC-030, support applicable MOD and FAC requirements, and prepare technical reports and evidence packages. Testing and documentation: Perform MOD-025 testing, oversee contractors conducting MOD-026 and MOD-027 testing, support FAC-008 studies, develop PRC-005 Protection System Maintenance Plans, and review MOD-032 data before submission. Audit and regulatory support: Contribute to NERC audits, self-certifications, regulatory inquiries, requests for information, and periodic data submissions. Development and acquisitions: Evaluate electrical infrastructure associated with prospective and newly acquired assets, identifying operational, technical, and reliability considerations. Continuous improvement: Contribute to the development of engineering processes, procedures, and tools while expanding technical expertise across the group's engineering disciplines. Requirements: The ideal candidate is an experienced electrical engineer with a strong foundation in power systems and the ability to investigate complex technical issues independently. You should combine practical knowledge of protection systems, electrical safety, and power generation with analytical thinking, sound judgment, and effective communication skills. Hold a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Have at least four years of relevant experience in power generation, transmission, or distribution. Experience with utility-scale power generation and renewable energy assets is preferred. Hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferred. Candidates without a PE license must have at least five years of experience as a practicing engineer. Demonstrate working knowledge across multiple electrical engineering disciplines, including system protection, arc-flash analysis, electrical safety, maintenance, reliability, and NERC compliance. Have experience conducting power system studies, including short-circuit, load-flow, protection coordination, and arc-flash analyses, using ETAP, SKM Power Tools, EasyPower, or similar software. Understand protective relaying principles, including relay setting development and review, configuration, and event record analysis. Possess strong working knowledge of NERC reliability standards relevant to generation, particularly the PRC, MOD, and FAC families. Have experience supporting regulatory audits, self-certifications, requests for information, and periodic compliance submissions. Demonstrate extensive knowledge of major power plant electrical equipment, controls, and protection systems. Be experienced in troubleshooting electrical systems, conducting root cause analyses, and evaluating operational risks. Possess strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Demonstrate excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. Be proactive, capable of making sound decisions independently, and comfortable taking initiative without constant direction. Have strong organizational and time-management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Work effectively both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Hold a valid U.S. driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record. Be authorized to work full-time in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available now or in the future. Be willing to travel up to 20% and support field activities when required. Be able to meet the physical requirements of site visits, with or without reasonable accommodation, including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders and stairs, working at heights, and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Benefits: Competitive annual salary: $125,000–$140,000, depending on relevant experience, qualifications, and other applicable factors. Comprehensive healthcare coverage: Access to health insurance benefits designed to support your well-being. Life insurance: Coverage to provide additional financial protection. Retirement savings benefits: Access to retirement programs that support long-term financial planning. Competitive total rewards package: A combination of compensation, insurance, and retirement benefits. Remote work arrangement: Work remotely from within the United States, with travel to generating sites as required. Professional development: Opportunities to expand your expertise across renewable and thermal power generation, electrical protection, safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. Technical variety: Work across a diverse portfolio of utility-scale generation assets and tackle complex engineering challenges. Collaborative team environment: Work with experienced professionals who value accountability, adaptability, collaboration, and excellence. Meaningful industry impact: Help maintain reliable power generation while contributing to a more sustainable energy future.
