Full job description
The European Parliament Traineeships offer an excellent opportunity for graduates and young professionals to gain practical experience within one of the European Union’s major institutions. These traineeships allow participants to understand European policymaking, international relations, administration, communication, law, finance, and other important fields while developing professional skills in a multicultural environment. The European Parliament offers two main types of traineeships: Schuman Traineeships within the Parliament’s Secretariat and traineeships with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Both provide valuable opportunities to learn about the functioning of European democracy and gain experience in public service.
- Schuman Traineeships at the European Parliament Schuman Traineeships are designed to enhance participants’ education and professional training while providing first-hand insight into the work of the European Parliament. Trainees may work in areas such as European policies, law, finance, administration, communication, information technology, logistics, and multilingualism. These paid traineeships generally last five months and take place during two annual sessions: March to July and October to February. Participants work within the relevant departments and gain practical experience related to the activities of the European Parliament. Eligibility Criteria To apply for a Schuman Traineeship, candidates generally must:
Be at least 18 years old. Hold a university degree or, for a limited number of positions, an eligible vocational qualification. Meet the applicable nationality requirements. Demonstrate the required language proficiency. Provide an eligible criminal record. Not have worked or completed another traineeship in an EU institution, body, or agency for more than two months. Meet the other conditions specified in the official application guidelines.
A limited number of opportunities may be available to applicants from outside the EU, subject to the applicable rules. Application Deadlines The European Parliament generally opens Schuman Traineeship applications twice a year:
March–July session: Apply from 1 to 31 October. October–February session: Apply from 1 to 31 May.
Applicants can apply for a maximum of three traineeship positions per application period. Selection is competitive, and candidates should carefully review each vacancy before applying. 2. Traineeships with Members of the European Parliament Another opportunity is to undertake a traineeship directly with a Member of the European Parliament. These placements allow trainees to learn about parliamentary work, political communication, research, and constituency-related activities. The duration ranges from six weeks to five consecutive months, depending on the arrangement. Eligible trainees undertaking full-time placements receive a monthly grant, with the amount determined by the applicable rules. Candidates must contact Members of the European Parliament directly to express their interest and submit an application. Nationality, language, education, and other eligibility requirements apply. How to Apply for European Parliament Traineeships Interested candidates should visit the official European Parliament traineeships website, review the available positions, and check the eligibility requirements and application deadlines. For Schuman Traineeships, applicants must complete the online application and submit the required information and documents. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide proof of qualifications, identification, and criminal-record documentation. Applicants should prepare a strong CV and motivation letter highlighting their academic background, relevant experience, language skills, and interest in European affairs.
