Merit scholarship for high-achieving students entering Portuguese higher education in 2026–2027, with annual support and an international-mobility component.

Complete scholarship details

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation states that each Merit Scholarship provides €2,000 per academic year and may be renewed through master’s study subject to the programme conditions. It also includes a one-time €2,000 contribution for international mobility. Applications opened 1 September 2026 at 10:00 and close 30 October 2026 at 15:00 Lisbon time.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must enter Portuguese higher education through the 2026–2027 general access competition with an admission grade of at least 170, be enrolled in a legally recognised Portuguese higher-education institution and accredited programme, have no previous higher-education degree, and provide proof that they applied for the DGES social-action grant. Selected applicants must satisfy the programme’s household per-capita annual-income ceiling of €14,000.

Tips for this scholarship

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
  2. Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
  3. Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
  4. Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.

Verification notes

Verified against the current Gulbenkian Merit Scholarships call. The page states a 30 October 2026, 15:00 Lisbon-time deadline. Portugal has returned to WET (UTC+0) by 30 October 2026, so 15:00 local equals 15:00 UTC. The €2,000 annual scholarship and separate one-time €2,000 mobility contribution are kept distinct.
