Full job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Head of Finance based in India. We are seeking an experienced finance leader to build and lead the finance function of a growing B2B SaaS business serving the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. In this remote role, you will take ownership of the full finance lifecycle, from accounting and financial reporting to billing, revenue recognition, and strategic planning. You will play a key role in implementing usage-based billing for AI-powered products while ensuring accurate financial controls and reporting. Working closely with US-based executives, customers, and external partners, you will turn financial and product usage data into actionable business insights. As the first in-house finance leader, you will establish scalable processes, hire and develop the finance team, and support pricing decisions, fundraising, and sustainable growth.

Accounting and financial close: Own the general ledger and monthly US GAAP accrual close using QuickBooks Online, delivering financial statements by the tenth business day of each month. Manage bank, payment processor, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations, prepare accruals and deferred revenue entries, and ensure readiness for financial audits and investor due diligence. Billing, collections, and sales tax: Manage end-to-end customer invoicing for annual platform subscriptions and prepaid AI agent credit packs. Reconcile product usage against purchased and remaining credits, oversee accounts receivable and collections, monitor US state sales tax obligations and economic nexus, and coordinate tax filings and exemption documentation. Revenue recognition and commissions: Prepare monthly revenue schedules in accordance with ASC 606, covering subscription revenue, usage-based revenue, deferred revenue, prepaid credit balances, credit expiry, breakage, and minimum commitments. Calculate sales commissions, resolve discrepancies, maintain commission capitalization schedules under ASC 340-40, and ensure accurate monthly accounting entries. Accounts payable and vendor management: Oversee vendor invoice processing and weekly payments, collect W-9 forms, coordinate 1099 reporting, and maintain a register of vendors, contracts, renewals, and notice periods. Monitor software, infrastructure, cloud, and AI model costs, identify savings opportunities, and negotiate vendor renewals. Financial planning and analysis: Own the operating model and forecast revenue, headcount, operating expenses, and cash runway. Develop separate models for subscription and usage-based revenue, analyze customer adoption and consumption patterns, prepare monthly budget-versus-actual reports, explain variances, and recommend pricing, packaging, and hiring decisions based on financial performance. Metrics and executive reporting: Track and report key SaaS metrics, including annual recurring revenue (ARR), usage revenue, net revenue retention, gross margin, cash burn, runway, and customer acquisition cost (CAC) payback. Analyze gross margin both including and excluding AI inference costs, and own monthly management reporting, board finance materials, and investor updates. Finance systems and process development: Lead the implementation of Stripe Billing and Stripe Tax in collaboration with product and engineering teams. Define usage meters, pricing structures, credit management, invoice templates, and testing requirements, and approve the system before the first usage-based invoice is issued. Integrate CRM, billing, and accounting systems to minimize manual work, and establish finance policies covering approvals, expenses, revenue recognition, and commissions. Team leadership and external partnerships: Hire and manage the first in-house accountant and build a scalable finance team as the business grows. Coordinate with US tax preparers, valuation specialists, auditors, and Indian chartered accountant partners. Oversee India entity compliance, including GST, TDS, payroll, ROC filings, statutory audits, and transfer pricing, while supporting fundraising through financial modeling, data room preparation, and investor due diligence. Requirements: Finance leadership experience: At least nine years of finance experience, including four or more years in a B2B SaaS business and experience serving as the senior finance professional. Demonstrated ownership of the US GAAP monthly close, rather than review-only responsibilities, is essential. Usage-based billing expertise: Direct experience managing a hybrid commercial model combining subscriptions or platform fees with usage-based charges. Candidates should be able to demonstrate practical experience with prepaid credits, usage billing, overage billing, and designing or implementing billing systems. Accounting and revenue recognition: Strong working knowledge of ASC 606 for subscription and consumption-based revenue, including deferred revenue and prepaid balances. Experience with order-to-cash and accounts payable processes involving US customers and vendors is required. Financial planning and modeling: Proven ability to independently build and own financial forecasts and operating models, including revenue, cash runway, expenses, headcount, customer adoption, and usage-based pricing assumptions. Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills and hands-on QuickBooks Online experience are required. Startup process development: Experience building or rebuilding finance operations in a startup environment without an established finance team, including creating policies, implementing systems, strengthening controls, and establishing scalable reporting processes. People management: Experience hiring and managing at least one accountant, with the ability to develop a finance function as the organization expands. Communication and collaboration: Clear, professional written English and the ability to work effectively with US-based executives, customers, and external partners. Candidates must be able to maintain three to four hours of overlap with US Pacific or Eastern time each working day. Preferred qualifications: A CA, CPA, or CMA qualification is an advantage. Additional value comes from experience with US SaaS sales tax, including economic nexus and tools such as Anrok or Avalara; Stripe Billing and Stripe Tax implementations; usage-based billing platforms such as Metronome, Orb, or Chargebee; commission management tools such as QuotaPath or CaptivateIQ; and ASC 340-40 commission capitalization. Additional technical and strategic skills: Familiarity with HubSpot or Salesforce data, SQL for extracting product usage data, and experience supporting financial audits, 409A valuations, fundraising, or investor due diligence are desirable. Benefits: Remote work: Fully remote position based in India. Full-time opportunity: A full-time leadership role with broad ownership of the finance function and the opportunity to shape financial strategy and operations. Professional impact: The opportunity to establish finance processes, implement usage-based billing for AI products, influence pricing decisions, and support business growth. Team-building opportunity: Scope to hire and develop the finance team as the organization scales. Compensation and additional benefits: Salary, healthcare coverage, paid leave, and other benefits have not been specified in the available job description.
