Overview
Hello, we’re Instrumentl. 👋
Full job description
Hello, we’re Instrumentl. 👋 Grants fund nonprofit work, but they also create some of the toughest operational challenges. Every grant brings its own deadlines, spending restrictions, reporting requirements, and commitments, so managing that complexity across fundraising, finance, and HR requires more than spreadsheets. Instrumentl is the system of record for grants. We bring discovery, applications, award compliance, and grant operations into one platform, giving nonprofits a shared foundation to grow their revenue and impact.
More than 6,000 nonprofits rely on Instrumentl, from local community groups to state and county governments, universities, and maybe even your local animal shelter. We're a cash flow positive, YC-backed company building our next chapter, and we're hiring people who will shape and grow the impact of the nonprofit sector.
We're hiring a Head of Product, reporting to co-founder Angela Braren, to lead our product managers as Instrumentl becomes the AI-native operating system for grant-funded organizations. You'll mature the products our founders take from 0 to 1, raise how fast we ship without giving up quality, and help the team build agents that work in production. This is a builder's seat: you'll personally own a core product area while growing the team, at a profitable company that's still early. Our ideal candidate is proactive, eager to learn, willing to experiment, and excited to collaborate with multiple teams to enhance the customer experience at Instrumentl. Get to know us at instrumentl.com/about ! For this position, we are looking for candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This role is in the office about once a week and includes about 25% travel.
Customers and product outcomes Be one of the strongest voices of the customer outside our founders, and develop your PMs into strong voices of the customer too. Own customer outcomes and account engagement across product areas. Take new, early products built by our founders and lead them through launch, broader customer adoption, and ongoing improvement. Get close to individual customers through calls, site visits, and conferences, and turn what you learn into product decisions. Scope and sequence the work: find the smallest version that works end to end, ship it, and iterate. Build hands-on Own a core product area yourself, likely our GrantOS platform, from roadmap to shipped work. Prototype and build alongside engineering and design, using AI tools to move from idea to working product quickly. Help the team build effective agents, including eval loops, golden datasets, and clear measures of output quality. Lead and scale the product team Lead and develop our PMs, with clear principles for how we make decisions and ship. Raise product velocity while keeping quality high, and bring the team along on AI-native ways of working. Partner with our co-founders to turn the company's product vision into a roadmap the whole org can execute. Partner with engineering, design, sales, and customer success to deliver cross-team work, especially on shared platform capabilities.
Required 8+ years in product management, including owning a whole product or most of a core product end to end in B2B SaaS. A track record of taking a product from 0 to 1 and then scaling it, with the customer or business results to show for it. You still build hands-on: you prototype, write specs, and ship products yourself, not only through others. Experience managing and developing PMs, including hiring, coaching, and performance management. A track record of setting strategy across multiple product areas, making investment tradeoffs, and delivering measurable customer and business outcomes. Nice to have Founder or founding PM experience. Shipped AI or LLM-powered features in production, including evals and ways to measure output quality. Built platform or system-of-record products that other teams depend on. Vertical SaaS experience, especially with nonprofit, government, or compliance-heavy customers. Experience with both product-led and sales-led growth.
For US-based candidates, the target salary range is $260,000 - $325,000 USD base + equity. Final compensation is determined based on experience, skillset, scope, interview performance, and geographic location. We’re committed to paying competitively and equitably. Benefits 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (50% for dependents). Generous PTO, including parental leave. 401(k). Company laptop and home-office stipend. Bi-annual company retreats.
Instrumentl is evolving rapidly, and you’ll be joining us at a pivotal point in our company’s journey. You’ll always have new challenges and opportunities to grow in your role - you won’t be bored! As an early member of our small but mighty team, you’ll also play a huge part in shaping our culture for the years and colleagues to come. At Instrumentl, we live by a set of Core Values that are at the heart of everything we do. Learn more about how we work at Instrumentl Careers !
