Overview
HEARD’s WP5 doctoral scholarship supports an equity-informed economic evaluation of community-health-worker-led cardiovascular risk-factor management in Lesotho.
Complete scholarship details
Reference WP5 is linked to the Horizon Europe-funded ComBaScale project and focuses on economic evaluation of community health worker-led cardiovascular risk-factor management in Lesotho compared with usual care. The scholarship is valued at ZAR 214,000 per year, awarded annually and renewable for up to three additional years to a maximum of four years subject to progress and continued funding. Approved fieldwork costs are covered separately, and qualifying full-time UKZN doctoral students may receive tuition-fee remission under the university’s stated conditions. The successful candidate is expected to register full time during the second semester of 2027.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants from Lesotho are preferred, with Southern African candidates considered secondarily. Applicants need a relevant Master’s degree with a first or upper second-class pass in Health Economics, Economics, Epidemiology, Mathematics or another quantitative field. Candidates should have a strong interest in economic evaluation, quantitative research and statistical software such as R, Stata or Python, be fluent in English and meet UKZN PhD admission requirements. Applicants already holding other scholarship funding are not eligible.
Tips for this scholarship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
