Hokkaido University's IGC-DHS will award five fully funded MEXT scholarships for October 2027: four doctoral places and one Master's place across data- and hypothesis-driven natural sciences.
Complete scholarship details
The International Graduate Course for Data-driven and Hypothesis-driven Science develops researchers who combine data-driven and hypothesis-driven approaches. The October 2027 special programme has five fully funded MEXT slots: four doctoral scholarships for three years and one Master's scholarship for two years. Applicants must first contact a prospective supervisor, then email the initial application package to the Office for International Academic Support during the official submission window.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must hold nationality of a country with which Japan has diplomatic relations and generally must have been born on or after 2 April 1992. Japanese nationals are not eligible at application unless an eligible dual national renounces Japanese nationality by the required time. Applicants need academic preparation suitable for Master's or doctoral study in the participating science fields and must satisfy English-proficiency requirements. The official call states that qualified international applicants may apply, with preference given to applicants from Southwest and Southeast Asia.
Tips for this scholarship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified on the official 1 June 2026 IGC-DHS call and current basic-requirements document: five fully funded MEXT places, participating disciplines, nationality/age rules, supervisor-first process and 1 October–15 November 2026 first-stage window. Current Hokkaido MEXT stipend rates were checked in the university handbook.
