Full job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an HPC/AI Systems Administrator based in the United States. As an HPC/AI Systems Administrator, you will ensure the reliability, performance, and availability of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure supporting advanced research and demanding workloads. You will deploy, configure, monitor, and maintain complex computing environments, including compute nodes, storage, networking, and software stacks. Your expertise in Slurm and HPC system administration will be essential to optimizing resource allocation, benchmarking performance, and maintaining operational stability. Working within a specialized Field Deployment and Systems team, you will collaborate with researchers and technical colleagues to resolve complex issues and improve system efficiency. This hands-on individual contributor role offers the opportunity to work with innovative computing technologies in a collaborative, impact-driven environment. The position is available remotely within the United States or on a hybrid basis from offices in Minnesota or California.

In this role, you will oversee the deployment and ongoing operation of HPC/AI infrastructure, ensuring systems remain secure, accessible, and optimized for demanding computational workloads. Your responsibilities will include: Install, administer, monitor, and maintain HPC/AI systems, including compute nodes, storage infrastructure, networking components, and software stacks. Develop and maintain automation tools for system provisioning, configuration management, and monitoring. Install, configure, and optimize job scheduling and resource management tools, particularly Slurm. Support system security, patch management, and troubleshooting of operational and infrastructure issues. Conduct performance benchmarking and system tuning to improve computing efficiency and reliability. Contribute to capacity planning and resource management to ensure HPC/AI environments meet operational and research needs. Deploy, configure, and maintain commonly used HPC/AI applications and software technologies, including MPI, containers, Spack, and environment modules. Document system administration procedures and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives. Provide technical expertise to researchers and resolve escalated support requests. Coordinate with vendors and contribute to system procurement and hardware and software lifecycle management. Requirements: The ideal candidate will bring substantial hands-on HPC system administration experience, strong technical knowledge of computing infrastructure, and a practical approach to diagnosing and resolving complex systems challenges. You should be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced technical environment. Key qualifications include: A bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. An advanced degree is a plus. Approximately 5–10 or more years of experience in HPC system administration. Required hands-on experience configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Slurm in large-scale HPC/AI environments. A deep understanding of HPC and AI technologies, infrastructure, and software ecosystems. Strong technical troubleshooting skills and the ability to maintain reliable, high-performance computing environments. Experience with automation, configuration management, monitoring, performance tuning, and resource scheduling. Familiarity with HPC software stacks and technologies such as MPI, containers, Spack, and environment modules. The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment; previous experience in such a setting is an advantage. Willingness and ability to travel within the United States approximately four times per year. U.S. citizenship and eligibility to visit U.S. government research facilities. Benefits: Flexible work arrangement: Remote work within the United States or a hybrid arrangement at an office in Minnesota or California. Innovative technology: Work with advanced HPC/AI infrastructure and computing technologies designed to support demanding research and computational workloads. Technical impact: Contribute directly to system performance, infrastructure reliability, and the effective use of high-performance computing resources. Collaborative environment: Work alongside a specialized technical team that values professionalism, collaboration, and meaningful impact. Professional development: Expand your expertise in HPC system administration, AI infrastructure, performance optimization, and large-scale computing environments. Compensation and additional benefits: Salary, healthcare, retirement benefits, paid time off, and other compensation details were not specified in the source description.
