Overview

On 24 March 2026, twenty-three young changemakers from Nigeria and Ghana came together physically for the first time as the inaugural cohort of the CivicHive Climate Fellowship 2026 supported by the Youth Climate Justice Fund. They represent different communities and experiences, with an aim to deepen their understanding of climate governance and develop practical, community-driven solutions to one of the most pressing challenges of our time. What began as a virtual onboarding session marked the start of an intensive learning journey that would challenge perspectives, foster collaboration, and inspire a new generation of climate leaders across West Africa.Today, they leave not just as fellows, but as researchers, advocates, innovators, and emerging leaders equipped to shape the future of climate governance in West Africa. Inside The Civichive Climate Fellowship 2026: From Learning To Leadership

Beyond Climate Awareness

Beyond Climate Awareness

The CivicHive Climate Fellowship was designed to move beyond simply understanding climate change. Instead, it explored the governance systems, policies, and accountability mechanisms that shape how communities experience climate impacts and how governments respond.

The fellowship was designed to move beyond simply understanding climate change. Participants explored the systems, institutions, and policies that determine how communities experience climate impacts and how governments respond. Through expert-led sessions, fellows gained practical knowledge in climate governance, climate budgeting, accountability and transparency, energy transition, climate finance, policy and advocacy, digital tools for climate action, research, civic technology, and sustainable development.

Together, these sessions challenged fellows to think differently about climate resilience, not simply as environmental protection, but as a question of public service delivery, citizen participation, transparency, and inclusive governance.

Research That Begins With Communities

Research That Begins With Communities

Every fellow completed a capstone research project rooted in a real challenge facing climate-vulnerable communities. Rather than proposing theoretical solutions, each project focused on practical, community-driven interventions that strengthen accountability, improve public service delivery, and advance a just energy transition. The research reflected the diversity of climate realities across West Africa and demonstrated that while climate challenges may differ across communities, locally led innovation remains a common solution.

In Ghana, Abban Ezra explored how civic technology can improve forest accountability and climate governance in vulnerable forest communities, while Ben-Natanyahu Selase reimagined plastic waste as an economic opportunity through a community-led plastic-to-fuel model designed to reduce flooding and create livelihoods in Accra’s Odaw Basin. Benjamin Diego Acheampong examined community participation in solar-powered irrigation initiatives in Northern Ghana, and Patricia Agyapomaa proposed Pollution to Power, an innovative model that transforms flood waste into clean energy while strengthening environmental accountability.

Across Nigeria, the fellows tackled pressing issues affecting communities from the Niger Delta to Northern Nigeria. Chidimma Nwonye investigated how community-generated air quality data can drive accountability and support a cleaner, more inclusive energy transition in Port Harcourt. Hayatudeen Mustapha explored how better e-waste management can promote environmental accountability while creating economic value through a circular economy approach in rural communities. In Katsina State, Kabir Abdullahi examined how solar energy distribution, PAYGO financing, and youth-led advocacy can expand access to clean energy in underserved communities. Meanwhile, Mansurah Taiwo Shobulo highlighted the role of green skills acquisition and circular waste up-cycling in Oshodi-Isolo, demonstrating how young people can lead climate resilience while creating sustainable livelihoods.

Other projects explored environmental accountability in Ondo State, women-led climate resilience for water security in Enugu, climate governance and public service delivery in Bayelsa, energy transition initiatives in Rivers State, climate-responsive medicine redistribution in Lagos, climate vulnerability among farming communities in Oyo State, and the use of satellite technology to strengthen climate-resilient agriculture.

Collectively, these projects demonstrate an important reality that effective climate action begins by listening to communities and designing solutions that respond to their lived experiences. They also reflect the fellowship’s broader vision of equipping young leaders not only to understand climate challenges but to develop practical, evidence-based solutions capable of influencing policy and creating lasting impact across West Africa.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Learning Beyond The Classroom

The fellowship concluded in an immersive week in Lagos, transforming three months of virtual learning into meaningful, real-world engagement.

On 23 July 2026, the fellows paid a learning visit to Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy. The interactive session offered participants a firsthand look at how subnational governments are responding to climate challenges through policy, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration.

Drawing from Lagos State’s experiences, Mrs. Oshodi shared insights on climate governance, circular economy strategies, environmental sustainability, and the critical role of youth in driving climate action at the state level. Fellows also engaged in thought-provoking discussions on how governments, civil society, and communities can work together to build resilient, climate-smart cities.

The visit bridged theory and practice, giving fellows a unique opportunity to connect the concepts explored throughout the fellowship with real policy implementation. More importantly, it reinforced a key lesson from the programme: lasting climate solutions are built through collaboration, accountability, and strong leadership at every level of government.

One of the highlights of the closeout programme was the Climate Solutions Pitch Session. Following an assessment of all capstone projects submissions, 10 fellows were shortlisted to present their ideas before a panel of judges drawn from government, civil society, and the development sector. The top three fellows were recognised for the quality, innovation, and impact of their work, receiving Certificates of Excellence and a soft grant to help advance their solutions beyond the fellowship. As part of the closeout experience, fellows also attended the West Africa CivicTech Conference 2026, where they joined hundreds of innovators, policymakers, researchers, and civic leaders from across the region.

For many, it was their first opportunity to engage directly with the wider civictech ecosystem, connecting climate accountability with broader conversations around governance, democracy, digital innovation, and citizen participation.

Building a Generation of Climate Leaders

Building A Generation Of Climate Leaders

The CivicHive Climate Fellowship aimed to build a community of West African leaders focused on climate accountability. Over three months, fellows from Nigeria and Ghana strengthened their understanding of climate governance and sustainability while building cross-border networks. Through expert instruction, research, and collaborative learning, participants gained technical knowledge, confidence, and practical skills. Their capstone projects and solution pitches proved that youth are actively leading community-centred climate action across the region.

Returning home as advocates, researchers, innovators, and leaders, the fellows are ready to shape policy, boost accountability, and drive climate resilience. Ultimately, the fellowship’s success rests on the future impact of these young leaders, rather than certificates or completed sessions. Achieving climate resilience demands active collaboration among citizens, institutions, and innovators.
