Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Intellectual Property (IP) Lawyer based in the United States. Join an early-stage, fully remote venture developing an AI-powered business network at the intersection of artificial intelligence, financial technology, and SaaS. In this part-time role, you will help establish and protect the intellectual property foundations of innovative digital products and technologies. Working directly with leadership, product, and engineering teams, you will identify patentable innovations and develop strategies to safeguard the organization's competitive advantage. You will contribute to patent filings, legal risk assessments, licensing considerations, and broader IP governance as the business prepares for future growth. This opportunity offers meaningful influence over legal and commercial decisions in an entrepreneurial, international environment. The flexible engagement requires approximately 8–16 hours per week and offers equity-based compensation rather than a fixed salary.
As an Intellectual Property Lawyer, you will provide strategic legal guidance to protect emerging technologies, manage intellectual property risks, and align patent strategy with long-term business objectives. Develop and advise on intellectual property strategies, including patent filings, prosecution, enforcement, and protection. Identify and evaluate patentable innovations across artificial intelligence, financial technology, software, and related product areas. Draft, review, and manage patent applications in collaboration with product, engineering, and technical teams. Conduct patentability assessments, freedom-to-operate analyses, and intellectual property risk evaluations. Monitor competitor patent activity and identify potential infringement risks, opportunities, and strategic implications. Support or represent the organization in intellectual property disputes, negotiations, and legal proceedings when required. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to protect the technology, products, and broader AI business ecosystem. Develop and maintain internal intellectual property policies, frameworks, and awareness initiatives. Monitor global patent law developments and emerging intellectual property trends in AI, fintech, SaaS, and software. Provide practical, commercially focused legal advice that balances robust IP protection with business priorities. Support strategic initiatives that strengthen intellectual property assets and contribute to future funding, growth, and scalability. Requirements: The ideal candidate combines strong patent law expertise with the ability to understand complex technology, provide actionable commercial advice, and work independently in a fast-moving startup environment. At least five years of experience in patent law, ideally within technology, artificial intelligence, SaaS, or fintech. Juris Doctor (JD) or an equivalent legal qualification, with specialization in intellectual property law. Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) or another relevant patent authority. Strong understanding of patent prosecution, litigation, intellectual property licensing, and related legal frameworks. Ability to interpret and assess complex technical innovations involving software, AI, and financial systems. Experience managing multiple intellectual property portfolios, patent applications, or innovation pipelines. Strong analytical skills and meticulous attention to legal, technical, and commercial details. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with product, engineering, and leadership teams. A sense of ownership, accountability, and commercial awareness, with a focus on delivering practical solutions rather than advice alone. Adaptability and comfort working in an entrepreneurial environment where priorities and business needs may evolve. Alignment with innovation, entrepreneurship, and long-term value creation. A personal computer equipped with a camera and a reliable internet connection for remote collaboration. Willingness to participate in an equity-based compensation arrangement. Availability to contribute approximately 8–16 hours per week, with flexibility around scheduling and a focus on agreed deliverables. Benefits: Compensation: Equity-based compensation only; no fixed salary is offered. Potential long-term value creation: Opportunity to participate in the company's future through equity, subject to the terms of the consulting agreement. Flexible part-time commitment: Approximately 8–16 hours per week, allowing contributors to maintain a primary paid role alongside this engagement. Fully remote work: Collaborate with an international team from your own location. Strategic influence: Work directly with senior leadership on intellectual property, product, technology, and innovation decisions. Early-stage impact: Help shape the IP foundations of an emerging AI-powered business network. Cross-industry exposure: Gain experience across AI, fintech, SaaS, and global business operations. Growth and funding readiness: Contribute to the organization's preparation for future investment, expansion, and scale. Entrepreneurial environment: Work with a team focused on innovation, collaboration, accountability, and long-term business development. Compensation terms: Equity arrangements and applicable conditions will be discussed during the selection process and documented in the consulting agreement. The opportunity is intended for candidates comfortable with an equity-based model.
