Overview
Kiribati’s Public Service Office is accepting I-Kiribati nominations for JICA’s 2027 SDGs Global Leader postgraduate scholarship in Japan. The current FY2027 JICA information packet documents Master’s and PhD routes for eligible government officials and academic researchers.
Complete scholarship details
The SDGs Global Leader programme supports postgraduate study at participating Japanese universities from autumn 2027. The detailed JICA FY2027 Southeast Asia and Pacific packet lists Kiribati among eligible countries and describes two-year Master’s and three-year PhD pathways. Applicants must be nominated through the responsible national organisation and later pass JICA screening and the selected university’s admission process.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be I-Kiribati/citizens of an eligible listed country and be young or mid-career government officials or academic researchers with an institutional affiliation. For Master’s study, applicants are in principle age 35 or under on 1 April 2027 and hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. For PhD study, applicants are in principle age 40 or under and hold a Master’s degree. Required English proficiency is at least TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 120–125. Applicants must be able to study physically in Japan, be in good health and not receive another Government of Japan-funded scholarship during the programme.
Tips for this scholarship
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
- Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
- Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
- Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.
Verification notes
Verified against the current Kiribati Public Service Office call and its linked July 2026 JICA General Information for FY2027. PSO describes undergraduate, Master’s and PhD study, but the linked FY2027 detailed packet is explicitly the Southeast Asia/Pacific postgraduate programme and documents Master’s and PhD eligibility and benefits; this record therefore publishes only the fully documented graduate track. PSO sets 7 October 2026 as the national submission deadline without a stated time or timezone.
