Full Job Description

Stanford Medicine physicians interested in pursuing nonfiction or scholarly work in the Medical Humanities are invited to apply for a fellowship at the Stanford Humanities Center.

Applications for 2026–27 academic year are currently being accepted and are reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Medical Humanities fellowship program is housed at the Stanford Humanities Center, Stanford's center for advanced research in the humanities, located on the historic campus. During their fellowship, Medical Humanities fellows have a dedicated office at the Center, and are immersed within an interdisciplinary community of scholars. Medical Humanities fellowships are typically for one academic quarter; shorter lengths of residency may be considered.

EligibilityThe following Stanford medicine affiliates are eligible to apply for this fellowship: UML faculty, UTL faculty, clinical educations (CE), and SoM instructors with access to sabbatical or professional development leave. Especially appropriate for this fellowship are candidates who are developing or completing a nonfiction project that could benefit from humanistic collaboration. Fellows are expected to be excused from at least 80 percent of research and clinical duties during the fellowship term. Applicants must provide documentation from their Division Chief or Department Chair attesting coverage of the Humanities Center’s fees ($6,000) associated with the position.

• Project statement: brief description (500–750 words) of the writing/research project to be pursued during the fellowship. Please explain the objectives, significance, methodology, and originality of the project in a manner clear to an interdisciplinary audience of academics within and outside the medical humanities. Please also indicate your preferred quarter (if any) for fellowship leave (fall, winter, or spring)
