Full job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior BESS Inverter Performance Engineer based in Canada. As a Senior BESS Inverter Performance Engineer, you will play a critical role in optimizing the performance and reliability of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will investigate complex inverter-related issues, identify root causes, and drive corrective actions in collaboration with technology vendors and engineering teams. Your expertise will help distinguish software, firmware, control logic, hardware, and power system challenges to ensure reliable system operation. You will oversee retrofit implementation across multiple sites, tracking progress, validation results, risks, and resolution milestones. Working in the renewable energy sector, you will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to improve system performance and operational efficiency. This remote opportunity offers the chance to contribute to large-scale energy storage projects and support the global transition toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

Investigate, prioritize, and resolve inverter-related performance issues across operating battery energy storage projects, using operational data, event logs, site evidence, and engineering analysis. Conduct root cause analyses to determine whether issues originate from software, firmware, control logic, hardware design, equipment limitations, or site-level power system conditions. Collaborate with inverter vendors to define corrective actions, establish retrofit requirements, coordinate implementation plans, and agree on validation criteria and deployment schedules. Maintain detailed vendor issue logs documenting investigation status, identified causes, corrective actions, validation evidence, outstanding risks, and final resolution. Review firmware updates, software releases, design modifications, and proposed retrofits to assess technical suitability, operational risks, and potential performance impacts. Support troubleshooting of voltage regulation, frequency response, real power, and reactive power distribution issues, particularly where inverter behavior interacts with grid or site conditions. Coordinate and monitor retrofit rollouts across multiple sites, tracking affected assets, assigned owners, deployment schedules, implementation progress, validation results, risks, and closure criteria using Excel, Smartsheet, or comparable tools. Develop and maintain issue trackers, deployment dashboards, and progress reports to improve visibility, accountability, and follow-through across technical initiatives. Communicate technical findings, risks, recommendations, and corrective action progress clearly to vendors, site teams, engineering colleagues, and management. Ensure all troubleshooting, corrective actions, and retrofit activities comply with applicable safety protocols, engineering standards, and organizational policies. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, with at least five years of experience in renewable energy, battery energy storage, or a relevant technical field. Strong understanding of inverter operation, dispatch control, firmware and software behavior, control logic, and hardware design considerations. Practical experience troubleshooting inverter or battery energy storage system performance issues using operational data, event logs, and technical evidence. Knowledge of power systems is preferred, including voltage control, frequency response, and real and reactive power behavior in grid-connected environments. Experience coordinating corrective actions or retrofit deployments across multiple sites, including schedule management, stakeholder coordination, progress tracking, risk management, and closure reporting. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Smartsheet, or similar tools for maintaining technical issue logs, retrofit trackers, deployment dashboards, and action plans. Familiarity with SCADA protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus, as well as industrial communication networks, including fiber optics, network switches, and TCP/IP. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to investigate complex technical issues and manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accountability, and consistent follow-through on technical actions and deliverables. Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Commitment to safety, engineering quality, ethical practices, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% of the time, including occasional travel on short notice. Benefits Competitive salary: CAD $100,000–$140,000 annually, plus performance-based bonus opportunities. Comprehensive benefits package: Health coverage and other employee benefits. Retirement benefits: Access to retirement plans. Paid time off: Paid leave to support work-life balance and personal well-being. Remote work: Flexibility to work remotely from Canada. Professional development: Opportunities to strengthen technical expertise and grow within the renewable energy and energy storage sector. Meaningful impact: Contribute to utility-scale energy storage projects that support renewable energy integration, grid reliability, and a more sustainable future. Collaborative environment: Work alongside multidisciplinary teams and external technology partners in a culture that values innovation, integrity, quality, customer focus, and sustainability. Inclusive workplace: Join an environment committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect for different backgrounds and perspectives.
