Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer based in the United States. This role offers an opportunity to shape the design and delivery of high-performance HVAC and electrification solutions that help businesses reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. As a senior technical contributor within the Engineering and Field Operations teams, you will lead mechanical design efforts for advanced systems incorporating variable refrigerant flow (VRF), heat pumps, energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS). You will develop engineering designs, contractor-ready scopes of work, and quality standards that support consistent implementation across multi-site commercial portfolios. Working closely with technology, controls, project management, service, and performance analysis teams, you will help ensure systems are efficient, reliable, and scalable. The position combines technical ownership, field collaboration, and opportunities to mentor fellow engineers. A hybrid work arrangement is preferred, with remote work considered and an average travel requirement of up to 25%.
Develop mechanical designs and contractor-ready scopes of work for high-performance HVAC projects, including load calculations, ventilation and air balancing, equipment selection and sizing, refrigerant piping, and equipment schedules. Design energy recovery ventilator (ERV) and dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) solutions for commercial sites. Establish, maintain, and improve engineering standards and design processes that enable consistent, repeatable deployment across different site types. Conduct technical quality-control reviews of designs and scopes of work prepared by internal teams, coordinating with external mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering firms when stamped documentation is required. Evaluate the technical feasibility, payback potential, and utility incentives associated with VRF systems, identifying opportunities to expand their applications. Support installation, commissioning, and post-installation troubleshooting in collaboration with project managers, field teams, service personnel, contractors, and equipment manufacturers. Partner with IoT and technology teams to define HVAC controls requirements and review manufacturer sequences of operation. Provide engineering support for complex hydronic systems, including cooling towers, and other HVAC projects such as packaged rooftop unit replacements, as workload permits. Develop the engineering basis for energy-savings calculations and utility incentive applications, ensuring technical documentation supports project objectives. Help improve engineering tools and workflows, including the adoption of software for load calculations and equipment selection. Collaborate across engineering, technology, performance analysis, service, project management, and project engagement teams to deliver integrated solutions. Mentor and support the professional development of engineers across the team. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. At least seven years of commercial HVAC engineering experience, with demonstrated ability to deliver complete design packages and clear, contractor-ready scopes of work. Hands-on experience designing VRF and heat pump systems, including equipment selection, refrigerant piping, and load calculations. Practical ventilation design experience, including ERV or DOAS systems and air balancing. Experience supporting HVAC installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities. Proficiency with load calculation and equipment selection software. Working knowledge of ASHRAE 62.1, ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 15, and the International Mechanical Code. Strong understanding of commercial HVAC fundamentals, including packaged rooftop units. Familiarity with energy modeling, efficiency analysis, utility incentive programs, and the documentation required to support incentive applications. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-engineers and collaborate effectively with contractors, manufacturers, and cross-functional teams. Ability to manage competing priorities, adapt to changing requirements, and contribute effectively in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to travel an average of up to 25%, depending on project needs. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, building automation systems, and sequence-of-operation design; experience with complex hydronic systems and cooling towers; a Professional Engineer (PE) license; experience supporting multi-site commercial portfolios in sectors such as restaurants, hospitality, fitness, education, or retail; and certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP). Benefits: Salary: Annual compensation range of $110,000–$130,000, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location. Healthcare coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance. Retirement savings: 401(k) plan. Insurance protection: Life insurance and disability coverage. Career development: Opportunities for professional growth and advancement within a rapidly growing organization. Technical ownership: A senior engineering position with meaningful influence over project design standards, engineering quality, and implementation practices. Mission-driven work: Opportunity to contribute to energy efficiency initiatives and solutions that help reduce carbon emissions. Collaborative environment: Work with a supportive, cross-functional team focused on technical innovation, sustainability, and customer outcomes. Work flexibility: Hybrid work preferred, with remote arrangements considered. Field exposure: Opportunities to engage directly with installation teams, contractors, manufacturers, and commercial projects.
