Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager based in the United States. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager, you will lead the design and delivery of complex mechanical systems for mission-critical facilities and building projects. You will oversee engineering activities from early design through construction documentation, ensuring technical excellence, code compliance, and alignment with project objectives. Working with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors, you will develop practical solutions that meet demanding performance and reliability requirements. Your expertise will help shape mechanical infrastructure for critical environments, including data centers, telecommunications facilities, and other specialized buildings. You will combine advanced mechanical design knowledge with project management, quality assurance, and technical leadership across multiple concurrent projects. This role offers the flexibility of remote work while requiring occasional site visits and in-person client meetings in California and other relevant locations. You will also mentor engineering and design professionals, manage project resources, and help deliver high-quality outcomes within established budgets and schedules.
You will lead mechanical engineering design and project delivery, ensuring that technical solutions meet client requirements, applicable codes, quality standards, and project constraints. Your responsibilities will include: Lead mechanical design: Develop, review, and coordinate mechanical systems and CAD drawings throughout schematic design (SD), design development (DD), and construction documentation (CD) phases. Manage project delivery: Coordinate multiple projects, establish work plans, monitor deliverables, manage budgeted hours, and ensure milestones are achieved on schedule. Develop engineering documentation: Prepare and review load calculations, specifications, scope-of-work narratives, basis-of-design documents, studies, reports, sketches, and other technical deliverables. Design mechanical systems: Apply expertise in chilled water (CHW), hot water (HW), condenser water, steam, water-source heat pumps, variable- and constant-flow systems, and other building HVAC applications. Select and evaluate equipment: Perform advanced equipment selection and analysis for chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air terminals, air valves, heat filters, direct-expansion (DX) equipment, fans, coils, and water-source heat pumps. Apply HVAC engineering principles: Design and evaluate air-side systems, including constant-volume (CV) and variable-air-volume (VAV) systems, as well as hydronic systems and associated equipment. Analyze building performance: Apply psychrometric principles, total-energy concepts, and an understanding of humid-climate design risks to develop effective mechanical solutions. Ensure code compliance: Interpret and apply relevant building and mechanical codes, review code-related design elements, and ensure documentation meets regulatory and project requirements. Coordinate multidisciplinary teams: Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, architectural, and structural professionals, as well as project coordinators, project managers, clients, and vendors. Resolve construction issues: Respond to requests for information (RFIs), review submittals, address installation challenges, and manage revisions, including architect's supplemental instructions (ASIs), using established documentation conventions. Maintain quality and manage risk: Conduct quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of calculations, drawings, and specifications while applying risk management practices to protect project and client interests. Provide technical leadership: Direct and mentor designers, establish drawing and specification requirements, review their work, and provide guidance to maintain high engineering and quality standards. Manage project resources: Develop and monitor work plans in coordination with other project managers, ensuring that design scope, documentation, staffing, and available hours remain aligned. Support client relationships: Participate in client meetings and vendor discussions, clarify technical requirements, and help deliver project objectives through effective communication and coordination. Requirements: The ideal candidate is an experienced mechanical engineer with strong project management capabilities, advanced building systems knowledge, and the leadership skills needed to deliver technically demanding projects. You should bring: At least 10 years of experience in mechanical design and/or project management. A degree in engineering and a valid Professional Engineer (PE) license. Demonstrated experience in building design and mechanical engineering for complex facilities. Strong technical proficiency in CAD drawings, engineering calculations, mechanical specifications, and design documentation. Extensive knowledge of applicable building and mechanical codes and the ability to ensure compliance throughout the design process. Advanced understanding of HVAC systems, including chilled and hot water systems, hydronic systems, air-side systems, variable- and constant-flow applications, and water-source heat pumps. Experience with equipment sizing, selection, scheduling, and performance analysis for a range of mechanical and HVAC equipment. A thorough understanding of psychrometrics, humid-climate design risks, and total-energy concepts. Strong project planning and management skills, including budget control, resource allocation, schedule management, and delivery across multiple concurrent projects. Experience reviewing calculations and technical documentation, performing QA/QC, resolving installation issues, and responding to RFIs and submittals. Proven leadership, mentoring, communication, and multidisciplinary coordination skills. The ability to work effectively with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal engineering teams. Experience in data centers, mission-critical facilities, or the telecommunications industry is preferred. Flexibility to work remotely while attending site visits and in-person client meetings as project requirements dictate. Benefits: Annual salary: $150,000–$170,000, with actual compensation depending on skills, experience, certifications, and work location. Remote work flexibility: The role offers remote work options, with site visits and in-person client meetings required as needed. Mission-critical projects: The opportunity to contribute to complex mechanical engineering projects for a major Fortune 500 client. Technical leadership: The opportunity to lead design activities, mentor engineering professionals, and influence project quality and delivery. Collaborative environment: Work with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams on challenging building systems projects. Referral bonus: A $5,000 referral bonus is advertised in the original posting; eligibility and conditions were not specified.
