Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Scientist, Mass Spectrometry based in the United States. As a Senior Scientist, Mass Spectrometry, you will drive innovative analytical research to uncover novel biological insights and accelerate drug discovery. You will leverage advanced mass spectrometry technologies to investigate complex biological systems, characterize therapeutic targets, and support the development of emerging therapeutic modalities. Working at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and analytical technology, you will design and optimize cutting-edge workflows that address challenging scientific questions. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to translate complex datasets into actionable insights and advance promising therapeutic opportunities. This role offers the opportunity to explore new technologies, develop innovative screening strategies, and strengthen analytical capabilities in a highly collaborative research environment. Your scientific contributions will help inform the discovery of innovative treatments, particularly in oncology, with the potential to make a meaningful difference for patients.
Design and execute mass spectrometry-based studies to investigate biological questions, support emerging therapeutic modalities, and advance drug discovery programs. Develop, optimize, and implement mass spectrometry-based screening, proteomics, and analytical workflows for compound discovery, target identification, target engagement, mechanism-of-action studies, and pathway biology. Evaluate and introduce new mass spectrometry technologies, analytical methods, and workflows to expand research capabilities and improve experimental performance. Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and continuously optimize LC-MS instrumentation and related analytical platforms to ensure reliable performance and high-quality data. Analyze and interpret complex mass spectrometry datasets, translating experimental findings into meaningful biological insights and actionable recommendations for drug discovery. Develop and refine sample preparation, chromatographic separation, and analytical methods for diverse biological applications. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across biology, chemistry, and related scientific fields to design fit-for-purpose analytical strategies and support research objectives. Contribute original scientific ideas, challenge existing assumptions, and help advance innovative research projects through iterative experimentation and creative problem-solving. Maintain accurate experimental records and documentation while staying current with developments in mass spectrometry, proteomics, and analytical technologies. Coordinate with external contract research organization (CRO) partners when required and provide technical or project leadership within cross-functional teams. Requirements Education and experience: Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline, with at least 2 years of relevant experience; alternatively, an M.S. with at least 4 years or a B.S. with at least 5 years of relevant industry, academic, or postdoctoral experience. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred. Mass spectrometry expertise: Strong foundational knowledge of mass spectrometry, with hands-on experience operating, troubleshooting, and optimizing liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) instrumentation. Analytical method development: Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and optimizing mass spectrometry-based analytical methods, screening assays, and/or proteomics workflows. Drug discovery applications: Proven ability to apply mass spectrometry techniques to biological research and drug discovery, including target identification, target engagement, protein characterization, interaction analysis, or pathway interrogation. Quantitative proteomics: Experience with quantitative proteomics and other mass spectrometry-based approaches for protein identification, characterization, and biological pathway analysis. Instrumentation: Experience with Orbitrap mass spectrometry systems, particularly Astral platforms, and/or Agilent quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) instruments is preferred. Specialized workflows: Familiarity with affinity selection mass spectrometry (ASMS) and affinity purification mass spectrometry (AP-MS) is desirable, particularly in drug discovery settings. Data analysis and computational skills: Proficiency with mass spectrometry data acquisition, processing, and analysis software, including tools for complex quantitative datasets, MS-based screening, and assay development. Scientific problem-solving: Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting capabilities, and creativity in developing solutions to challenging scientific and technical problems. Biological knowledge: Knowledge of cancer biology and relevant signaling pathways is an advantage. Communication and collaboration: Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific findings clearly and work effectively across multidisciplinary teams. Leadership and adaptability: Demonstrated initiative, a collaborative mindset, a commitment to continuous learning, and the ability to contribute to project coordination or provide matrix leadership when needed. Work arrangement: Ability to work on-site in San Carlos, California, as required by the original posting. The role is advertised with San Carlos and Remote (US) location options; candidates should confirm the applicable work arrangement during the hiring process. Benefits Competitive compensation: Annual base salary ranging from $150,200 to $187,800 , depending on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and work location. Performance incentives: Eligibility for an annual bonus plan for non-commercial roles. Equity opportunities: Potential discretionary equity awards and the option to participate in an employee stock purchase plan. Healthcare coverage: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance. Retirement and financial benefits: 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending accounts (FSA), and health savings accounts (HSA), where applicable. Insurance protection: Life insurance coverage. Work-life balance: Paid time off and wellness benefits. Scientific development: Opportunities to explore emerging analytical technologies, contribute to innovative research programs, and collaborate with experts across scientific disciplines. Meaningful impact: The opportunity to contribute to therapeutic innovation and research aimed at advancing cancer treatment.
