Amazon's Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT) organization is responsible for the end-to-end systems that plan, optimize, and execute the movement of billions of packages across the world's most complex logistics network. We build real-time, intelligent, and fully automated systems that touch every aspect of the delivery experience — from the moment a customer clicks "Buy" to the package arriving at their door.

We are looking for an experienced Software Development Engineer III to design, build, and operate highly scalable distributed systems at Amazon scale. This role requires strong hands-on production experience with both Java and Rust.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will own complex, high-impact technical problems end-to-end, drive architecture and design decisions, and deliver reliable, scalable solutions. You will work across distributed systems, performance, scalability, and service architecture while influencing technical direction and mentoring engineers across the team.

Key job responsibilities

  • Hands-on experience designing, building, testing, and operating production software in Rust.
  • Experience designing and delivering scalable distributed systems and leading architecture across multiple components or services.
  • Lead architecture and technical design for complex, high-impact projects.
  • Solve challenging problems involving distributed systems, concurrency, performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Drive technical decisions across team and organizational boundaries.
  • Own systems end-to-end, including production operations and operational excellence.
  • Mentor engineers and raise the team’s technical bar.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
  • Professional production experience developing software in both Java and Rust
  • Experience migrating high-scale services from Java to Rust
  • Experience optimizing memory-intensive or latency-sensitive distributed systems, benchmarking, performance profiling, and large-scale production migrations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
