This is a senior engineering opportunity supporting the advancement, sustainment, and modernization of small unmanned aircraft systems. You will contribute to complex defense programs by connecting systems engineering, integration, requirements, architecture, safety, and operational effectiveness. The role involves evaluating system performance, conducting trade studies, assessing risks, and supporting critical acquisition and engineering decisions. You will work across multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with government stakeholders in a highly technical and mission-focused environment. Your expertise will help ensure systems meet rigorous airworthiness, safety, information assurance, and lifecycle engineering standards. The position offers significant technical ownership across distributed and virtual environments, networking technologies, and complex weapon-system architectures. This is an onsite role at Wright-Patterson AFB, with approximately 20% travel and an opportunity to contribute to high-impact national defense missions.

Apply DoDD 5000-series guidance and applicable Air Force engineering policies to acquisition engineering activities. Develop and analyze system and subsystem requirements, translating operational needs into design criteria, specifications, and integration objectives. Conduct technical planning, system integration analyses, trade studies, and risk assessments across complex weapon-system platforms. Support development of system performance requirements, integration objectives, and estimates for design, development, and sustainment activities. Review engineering proposals, designs, specifications, and change packages, providing recommendations to optimize cost, schedule, performance, and technical outcomes. Conduct engineering evaluations supporting airworthiness, safety, and Operational Safety, Suitability & Effectiveness (OSS&E), including assessments aligned with MIL-HDBK-516 and MIL-STD-882. Participate in engineering reviews, design reviews, Technical Interchange Meetings, working groups, and program reviews, providing technical input, documentation, and reporting. Support systems integration, risk analysis, supportability, and effectiveness assessments for training and operational systems, including mission and flight trainers, avionics trainers, courseware, and maintenance training devices. Provide engineering leadership and technical direction for systems operating within large-scale distributed and virtual environments. Apply networking principles and protocols including TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, and SSL to system development and integration activities. Support development and integration across Windows, Sun, Linux, and Unix environments using technologies such as C/C++ and Java. Provide guidance for Information Assurance accreditation and implementation of IA controls for systems, including large-scale Platform Information Technology environments. Produce engineering artifacts and technical deliverables supporting systems integration, OSS&E, airworthiness certification, system safety, and lifecycle systems engineering. Apply lifecycle systems engineering practices in accordance with applicable Department of the Air Force engineering and acquisition requirements. Requirements: U.S. citizenship is required. Active Secret security clearance is required. Master’s or Doctorate degree in a related field from an ABET-accredited engineering program with 10 years of relevant technical or professional experience, including at least 5 years supporting the Department of Defense; or a Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program with 12 years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years supporting the DoD. Strong experience with systems engineering and integration across complex weapon-system architectures. Demonstrated knowledge of airworthiness, safety, and OSS&E evaluations in accordance with MIL-HDBK-516 and MIL-STD-882. Experience developing and managing requirements using tools such as DOORS, SysML, or Cameo, along with system architecture modeling. Strong technical analysis, trade-study, and risk-assessment capabilities supporting DoD 5000-series acquisition processes. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Strong collaboration skills and experience working across multidisciplinary engineering teams and with government stakeholders. Adaptability and professionalism in fast-paced and evolving program environments. Proactive problem-solving skills and the ability to build positive, solutions-oriented relationships. Strong understanding of distributed and virtual system environments, networking technologies, and complex system integration. Experience with C/C++, Java, and networking protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, and SSL is valuable. Ability to work onsite at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, with approximately 20% travel.
