Full Job Description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

The Amazon Leo Global Business & Customer Operations (GBCO) engineering team owns designing, implementing, and operating the planning systems that decide where Leo can be sold, how much capacity is available in each location, and at what price. Satellite capacity is finite and varies by geography, so our systems turn raw network coverage into a trustworthy, sellable inventory plan and enforce that plan at the point of sale so the network is never oversold. We sit between the teams that model what the network can do and the teams that operate it in real time, and we bring the business context that shapes those plans. We are looking for a talented software development engineer to help scale up and optimize the planning and simulation methods at the center of that work: the algorithms and systems that decide which cells to open for service, how much capacity each will deliver, and whether the live network can deliver it. As one of our valued team members, you will be obsessed with matching our standards for operational excellence with a relentless focus on delivering results.

You will not do this alone. You will work closely with partner engineering teams across Amazon Leo. You will lead the system architecture of simulation tooling that spans multiple use cases and users, taking planning and simulation methods and making them faster, larger-scale, and production-ready, with the curiosity to engage with the substance of the problem rather than treat it as a black box.

Beyond the planning and simulation work, you will contribute across the other systems our team owns. Our portfolio spans capacity, demand, pricing, inventory, and reservations, and from time to time you will pick up work on any of them as priorities and dependencies shift, from backend services to data pipelines. You will both operate systems that produce commitments the business plans against and build new ones as Leo scales worldwide.

Key job responsibilities

  • Scale up and optimize the planning and simulation methods that turn satellite geometry and demand into capacity and coverage plans, improving their performance, scale, and fidelity.
  • Make large problems tractable through sound engineering: decomposition, precomputation, caching, and parallelism, proven out with measured results rather than intuition.
  • Build and operate the high-performance data and compute infrastructure (large-scale data stores, columnar query, batch fan-out) that lets planning run quickly.
  • Build systems that produce correct, trustworthy results, validating outputs against reference implementations and guarding the accuracy of numbers the business commits to.
  • Partner with the teams that model the network's capabilities and the teams that operate it in real time to move methods from demonstration toward production.
  • Contribute across the other planning systems our team owns, from backend services to data pipelines, as priorities and dependencies require.
  • Utilize AWS and other Amazon technologies to build highly available, scalable software services, and provide operational excellence including monitoring, alarming, and on-call ownership.

Export Control Requirements: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

About the team Our team is the engineering group within Global Business & Customer Operations (GBCO) for Amazon Leo. We own the systems that connect satellite network capacity to what customers can actually buy: capacity planning, demand planning, pricing, inventory, reservations, and the data platform that ties them together. We started focused on capacity planning and have grown our scope alongside the business, so there is real room to shape new systems as Leo expands globally. We value ownership, operational excellence, and engineers who think across system boundaries.
