Full Job Description

Amazon's CloudTune organization is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer to join the Scaling Efficiency team. CloudTune ensures that Amazon's infrastructure is right-sized at the right time, powering capacity decisions for thousands of EC2-based services across Amazon. Scaling Efficiency sits at the center of this mission, building the automation, data infrastructure, and platform services that make accurate, timely capacity decisions possible at Amazon's scale.

As a Senior SDE, you will own the design and delivery of distributed systems that serve internal customers across science, capacity management, and engineering. You will tackle hard problems in areas like large-scale data processing, workflow orchestration, infrastructure automation, and platform reliability. The systems you build will directly impact how Amazon prepares for its highest-traffic moments and how it operates efficiently every day in between.

This is a role for a builder who wants to operate at the intersection of infrastructure and data, someone who can translate ambiguous business problems into well-architected technical solutions, ship them into production, and raise the engineering bar for the team along the way.

Key job responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end design, implementation, and operation of distributed systems that serve Amazon-scale workloads.
  • Lead technical strategy and architecture for your area, making tradeoffs between speed of delivery and long-term platform health.
  • Build services that are generic, composable, and designed for reuse, reducing duplication and accelerating the pace of delivery across the organization.
  • Drive operational excellence across your systems, including monitoring, alarming, incident response, and on-call ownership.
  • Partner with scientists, data engineers, and capacity managers to translate business requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual toil and close automation gaps through better tooling, self-service interfaces, and data-driven guardrails.
  • Influence engineering culture through design reviews, code reviews, technical mentorship, and contributions to team-wide best practices.

About the team Scaling Efficiency builds the automation and data infrastructure that powers CloudTune's capacity decisions across Amazon. Our teams work at the intersection of infrastructure and data science, building platform services that enable accurate forecasting, automated scaling, and efficient capacity management for thousands of EC2-based services. We partner closely with scientists, capacity managers, and service owners across Amazon. We value ownership, operational excellence, and building systems that compound in value over time, so Amazon's engineers can focus on their customers instead of their infrastructure.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
