Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Pharmacist based in the United States. The Staff Pharmacist will play a central clinical role in a high-volume, closed-door pharmacy environment, ensuring prescription accuracy, medication safety, and exceptional patient care. You will verify prescriptions, conduct clinical reviews, and provide personalized counseling through phone and digital channels. Working closely with prescribers, pharmacy technicians, and cross-functional teams, you will help resolve clinical issues and ensure patients receive their medications safely and efficiently. The role combines hands-on pharmaceutical expertise with workflow supervision, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality improvement. You will contribute to technology-enabled pharmacy operations designed to improve medication access and patient outcomes at scale. This is a full-time, remote opportunity requiring a structured approach, strong attention to detail, and flexibility to work rotating shifts.
The Staff Pharmacist will oversee prescription verification, patient counseling, pharmacy workflow quality, and regulatory compliance while collaborating with internal teams and healthcare providers to ensure safe and timely medication delivery. Key responsibilities include: Review and clinically verify new and refill prescriptions for therapeutic appropriateness, drug interactions, contraindications, and accurate dosing. Validate prescription data entered by pharmacy technicians, ensuring accuracy against provider orders and transfer records. Perform final pharmacist verification of prescriptions before shipment, confirming the medication, dosage, quantity, National Drug Code (NDC), and labeling. Conduct daily prospective drug utilization reviews (DUR) to identify and resolve clinical concerns before fulfillment. Ensure appropriate handling of specialty medications, including verification of cold-chain and temperature-control requirements. Provide proactive outbound counseling calls to patients receiving new prescriptions, explaining medication use, potential side effects, dosing instructions, storage requirements, and adherence strategies. Respond to incoming clinical calls and provide clear, accurate medication guidance, directing non-clinical questions to the appropriate patient support team. Document patient interactions thoroughly in the pharmacy management system. Provide bilingual counseling in Spanish when applicable. Contact prescribers by phone or electronic messaging to clarify incomplete, ambiguous, or clinically inappropriate prescriptions before dispensing. Collaborate with prescribers on therapeutic substitutions, dispense-as-written (DAW) overrides, and formulary alternatives to minimize delays. Supervise pharmacy technicians across data entry, prescription processing, packaging, and fulfillment workflows in accordance with applicable state regulations. Perform real-time quality checks on technician work, provide corrective feedback, and escalate performance trends to pharmacy leadership. Support technician coaching and training as directed. Maintain compliance with HIPAA, state pharmacy practice laws, federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations, and internal policies. Ensure the secure handling, documentation, and destruction of materials containing protected health information (PHI). Participate in quality assurance activities, internal audits, prescription error tracking, and near-miss reporting. Report adverse drug events and medication errors through established pharmacovigilance channels when applicable. Maintain appropriate storage conditions and fulfillment-area standards, particularly for temperature-sensitive medications. Collaborate with pharmacy leadership, patient services, clinical, compliance, and technology teams to improve clinical and operational processes. Coordinate with shipping and fulfillment teams to resolve packaging errors, returned shipments, and delivery failures that may affect patient access to medication. Provide clinical input on technology enhancements, workflow tools, and software configurations affecting prescription verification and patient counseling. Participate in team meetings, quality reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives. Requirements: The ideal candidate is a licensed pharmacist with strong clinical judgment, experience handling high prescription volumes, and a commitment to patient safety and regulatory compliance. The following qualifications are required or preferred: Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited college of pharmacy. Active pharmacist license in good standing in the state where the candidate resides and with the Idaho Board of Pharmacy. Ability to obtain pharmacist licensure in three additional states from the specified list within the first nine months of employment, if not already licensed in those states. Eligible states include Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, California, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Spanish-language proficiency is preferred for bilingual patient counseling. Demonstrated ability to verify prescriptions accurately and efficiently in a high-volume pharmacy environment without compromising clinical quality. Strong attention to detail and sound clinical judgment when assessing drug interactions, contraindications, dosage accuracy, and therapeutic appropriateness. Technical aptitude and the ability to learn pharmacy management systems, prescription verification platforms, and internal workflow tools. Excellent patient communication skills and the ability to explain complex medication information clearly and compassionately. Ability to collaborate effectively with prescribers, pharmacy technicians, and cross-functional teams. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a structured, fast-paced environment. Familiarity with mail-order, specialty, retail, or closed-door fulfillment pharmacy operations is preferred, particularly with at least three years of relevant experience. Familiarity with pharmacovigilance procedures and adverse drug event reporting is preferred. Availability to work 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule, Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with rotating Saturday shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
