Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Constraint Generation based in the United States. We are seeking an experienced software engineer with expertise in motion planning and autonomous systems to develop advanced software for self-driving trucks. In this role, you will own complex engineering challenges across the development lifecycle, from defining system behaviors and designing solutions to implementation, testing, and deployment. You will build high-performance software in modern C++ and Python, optimized for compute-constrained onboard platforms. Working within a small, product-focused team, you will collaborate with specialists across autonomy, systems engineering, and verification to deliver safe, smooth, and reliable vehicle trajectories. You will also influence technical architecture, guide engineering decisions, and help shape the long-term development roadmap. This opportunity is ideal for an engineer who thrives on solving real-world robotics challenges and translating sophisticated algorithms into dependable autonomous driving capabilities.
Lead the end-to-end delivery of motion planning and constraint generation features, from initial design through integration, testing, and deployment. Translate vehicle behaviors, product requirements, and operational needs into robust software solutions that generate safe, smooth, and reliable trajectories for autonomous trucks. Take ownership of complex technical challenges, clarify ambiguous requirements, and coordinate interfaces with upstream and downstream teams to maintain a simple, scalable system architecture. Contribute to long-term software architecture, technical strategy, and product roadmaps while ensuring timely delivery of engineering milestones. Design, implement, and maintain clean, reliable, and high-performance software using modern C++ and Python, with particular attention to compute-constrained environments. Collaborate with systems engineers to ensure that autonomy features meet safety, reliability, and product requirements. Work closely with teams responsible for trajectory generation, trajectory evaluation, world fusion, prediction, perception, localization, and mapping to develop integrated autonomous driving solutions. Partner with verification teams to establish comprehensive testing and validation practices, including unit testing, simulation, and log-based simulation. Evaluate system behavior, identify performance limitations, and iterate on software features to improve on-road performance and operational reliability. Participate in technical design reviews and iteration exercises, communicating complex engineering concepts clearly and aligning stakeholders around effective solutions. Contribute across the broader autonomous decision-making stack, applying transferable engineering skills to challenges beyond your immediate area of expertise. Requirements: Strong programming skills in C++ and Python, including the ability to develop efficient, maintainable software for resource-constrained computing environments. Experience developing software for real-world robotics, autonomous systems, or semi-autonomous platforms. Solid understanding of motion planning concepts and the challenges involved in developing reliable autonomous vehicle behaviors. Ability to take ownership of complex engineering problems, navigate ambiguity, and deliver solutions across the full software development lifecycle. Experience with software design, implementation, integration, testing, and validation in technically demanding environments. Familiarity with unit testing, simulation-based testing, log simulation, or comparable verification techniques. Strong systems-thinking skills and the ability to collaborate across interconnected software components and engineering disciplines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts, facilitate design discussions, and align stakeholders. A collaborative, adaptable mindset and willingness to work across different parts of the autonomous decision-making stack, including areas that may differ from previous experience. Ability to meet applicable U.S. national security, residency, work authorization, citizenship, or export-control requirements associated with the role. Certain restrictions or government export licensing requirements may apply depending on the candidate's circumstances. Benefits: Work location flexibility: Opportunity to work remotely within the United States or from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Technical ownership: Lead complex engineering initiatives and influence the design and evolution of autonomous driving software. Product impact: Contribute directly to the safety, reliability, and real-world performance of autonomous trucking technology. Cross-functional collaboration: Work alongside specialists in robotics, motion planning, perception, prediction, mapping, systems engineering, and verification. Innovation-focused environment: Join a small, product-oriented engineering team tackling challenging problems in artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous systems. Professional growth: Opportunity to expand technical expertise across the autonomous decision-making stack and contribute to architectural strategy. Inclusive workplace: Work in an environment committed to diversity, equal opportunity, and fostering a culture of inclusion, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Compensation and additional benefits: Salary range, healthcare coverage, retirement plans, paid leave, and other specific benefits were not disclosed in the available job description.
