Strengthening the Commonwealth through Scholarships and Fellowships

The CSC has published a policy briefing examining the role of Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships as a key mechanism through which the United Kingdom supports the Commonwealth. Delivered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the CSC provide hundreds of opportunities each year for Commonwealth citizens to study and undertake professional development in the UK.

The paper highlights these scholarships and fellowships as a clear expression of the UK’s longstanding commitment to the Commonwealth and its Charter, contributing to education, skills development, and long-term capacity building. As the largest contributor to the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), the UK plays a leading role in sustaining the programme, having funded over 34,500 awards since 1959.

It also emphasises the programme’s pan-Commonwealth reach, with participation from nearly all member countries since 1960 and continued broad geographic engagement. Beyond individual benefits, the scheme supports a global alumni community that fosters ongoing collaboration, professional networks, and a shared sense of Commonwealth identity.

The scholarships and fellowships are also closely aligned with the values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter. Through the CSC’s six development themes, they promote sustainable outcomes across areas such as governance, innovation, health, and resilience. Alumni contribute to this impact through leadership and professional roles across sectors, helping to advance inclusive and sustainable development across the Commonwealth.

Tips for this scholarship

Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.

  1. Check eligibility, funding coverage, study/project level and every required document before investing time in the application.
  2. Prepare transcripts, references, language tests, proposal/motivation statement and proof documents early.
  3. Separate the scholarship deadline from any university/program admission deadline; they may be different.
  4. Treat “fully funded” as a source fact only when the official provider explicitly confirms the covered costs.

Verification notes
