Full job description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a VP, Finance and Accounting based in the United States. We are seeking an accomplished finance executive to lead financial strategy, accounting operations, and long-term financial sustainability for a mission-driven, technology-enabled nonprofit organization. In this high-impact leadership role, you will serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director and Leadership Team, translating complex financial information into actionable insights that support organizational strategy and growth. You will oversee accounting, financial controls, budgeting, forecasting, treasury management, and compliance across multiple legal entities. Combining executive-level vision with hands-on financial expertise, you will strengthen systems, modernize processes, and build a scalable, high-performing finance function. You will also lead a lean team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous professional development. This is an opportunity to shape financial operations within a fully remote, nationwide organization that values transparency, innovation, and measurable social impact.
Lead enterprise-wide financial strategy: Develop and execute financial strategies across multiple organizational entities, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives, accounting standards, applicable tax regulations, and federal, state, and local requirements. Advise executive leadership: Serve as a strategic financial partner to the Executive Director and Leadership Team, providing scenario analysis, financial forecasts, investment recommendations, and constructive guidance on organizational decisions. Support board-level decision-making: Prepare financial reports, analysis, and recommendations for the Board of Directors, enabling effective oversight, resource allocation, and long-term planning. Own accounting operations and reporting: Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, financial statements, consolidation, intercompany transactions, cost allocations, and timely, accurate reporting across multiple legal entities. Remain actively involved in hands-on accounting work when needed. Strengthen financial controls and compliance: Establish, document, and monitor robust internal controls and segregation of duties, address control gaps, protect organizational assets, and maintain a culture of financial accountability. Manage nonprofit and political entity accounting: Oversee appropriate accounting structures and practices for 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and political action committee entities, including tracking revenue and expenses, documenting inter-entity transfers, and collaborating with legal counsel on compliance requirements. Lead financial planning and analysis: Direct annual and multi-year budgeting, forecasting, scenario planning, and financial analysis in alignment with organizational strategy and resource needs. Improve financial visibility: Develop practical financial dashboards, reporting tools, and performance insights that help senior leaders understand budgets, monitor expenditures, evaluate investments, and manage financial risks. Oversee treasury management: Manage banking relationships, cash flow, liquidity, and reserve investment recommendations to support financial stability and optimize resources across organizational entities. Develop and coach the finance team: Lead, mentor, and develop a lean finance team, establishing clear expectations, strengthening capabilities, and balancing high performance with ongoing support. Modernize financial systems and processes: Oversee integrations and automation across Sage Intacct, ADP, Ramp, and Paystand, including payroll-to-general-ledger integration, to reduce manual work and improve accuracy. Advance technology-enabled finance: Evaluate and implement financial planning, reporting, automation, and AI-enabled tools that improve efficiency, strengthen controls, and support scalable operations. Lead cross-functional initiatives: Contribute to organization-wide projects, respond to time-sensitive requests from executive leadership and funders, and collaborate effectively across a geographically distributed organization. Requirements: At least 10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including senior-level leadership as a CFO, VP or Director of Finance, Controller, or in a comparable role with substantial accounting responsibility. Experience leading finance and accounting within an organization with an annual budget of at least $15 million. A bachelor's degree or equivalent qualifying work experience. Candidates without a bachelor's degree must have four additional years of relevant experience; candidates with an associate's degree must have two additional years of relevant experience. Extensive hands-on accounting expertise, including ownership of financial close processes, financial reporting, external audits, and nonprofit accounting. Demonstrated experience managing accounting across at least two legal entities, including consolidation, intercompany transactions, and cost allocation. A proven track record of strengthening internal controls, improving segregation of duties, resolving control deficiencies, and addressing audit findings. Experience leading budgeting, forecasting, scenario planning, and financial analysis for senior leaders. Candidates with strong accounting leadership and meaningful FP&A experience will also be considered. Experience implementing or integrating a cloud-based ERP or core financial system, including managing organizational change and supporting user adoption. Strong people leadership skills and a player-coach mindset, with the ability to set strategic direction while contributing directly to operational and technical work. A mission-driven, entrepreneurial, and collaborative approach, with a commitment to ethical financial management, transparency, and responsible stewardship. The ability to balance rigorous financial controls with organizational agility, manage changing priorities, and respond effectively to urgent requests. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders and collaborate across a remote organization. Alignment with the organization's mission, values, and commitment to expanding access and opportunity in communities. Preferred qualifications: CPA certification strongly preferred; MBA or another relevant advanced degree is a plus. Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct, particularly in multi-entity environments and integrated financial systems. Experience with 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), or political action committee accounting. Experience leading FP&A functions and selecting or implementing financial planning and reporting tools. Familiarity with treasury management, cash management, and reserve investment strategies. Experience using AI-enabled analytics and reporting tools to improve financial decision-making. Experience managing and developing remote teams. Benefits: Annual salary: Compensation depends on relevant experience and geographic cost-of-labor tier. Base salary range: $167,800–$220,000 in 100% cost-of-labor adjustment tier locations, with starting compensation increasing by approximately 5% across successive tiers. In the highest-tier cities, such as New York, starting pay begins at $201,360. Medical, dental, and vision insurance, with coverage available for spouses, families, and domestic partners. Organization-wide winter break between Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Fully remote work arrangement for U.S.-based employees, with flexible scheduling. Opportunities to work with a collaborative leadership team in a mission-oriented organization recognized for its workplace culture.
