Language assistants work with teachers and small groups to help students practise spoken English or French through classroom activities. The standard mandate runs from September to May. The official program page states an approximate gross salary of CAD 30,000 for a nine-month mandate based on a 25-hour work week, plus holiday pay and other employer benefits. Additional compensation may apply for remote or rural placements.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents; have excellent oral and written skills in the language in which they will work; and meet the postsecondary-study requirement. For studies outside Quebec in Canada, at least one full year of college or university is required; for studies in Quebec, two years of college or one full year of university; for studies outside Canada, at least one full year of postsecondary study plus a formal assessment of academic credentials. The official program states there is no age limit and prior classroom experience is not required.
