Kamuzu University of Health Sciences KUHeS believes in promoting internationalization within the university through exchange of ides and experiences. One of the university’s policies is that a certain percentage of newly recruited students should be international students. Dating back in history, the university has a record of international graduates from various countries across the globe such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland, Egypt and India. These graduates are currently utilizing their attained knowledge and skills all over the world. The University is listed in the world directory of Medical Schools (WDoMS) and recognized globally by international institutions including the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), United States of America and The World Health Organization.

HOW TO APPLY:

Undergraduate (generic) Applicants

All applications for generic undergraduate programmes go through the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) and there are two ways of how applicants can submit their applications:

The medium of instruction and examination for all programmes at KUHeS is English. Students admitted to the University are required to have good English proficiency. However, students do not need to submit proof of English Language proficiency when making applications.

While in the course of their studies, especially the undergraduate generic programmes, international students may need to learn a little bit of the official local language Chichewa because they may interact with patients, guardians or members of the communities during their clinical years.

International students who require a visa to enter the country should apply for an entry visa at the Malawian Embassy/ High Commission in their country of residence immediately when a place has been offered. The entry visa allows one to legally stay in the country for 30 days during which time they will apply for a study permit as explained below.

A study permit is offered to all foreign nationals who intend to study on full time basis at a Malawian educational institution. The process of application is done while applicant is already in Malawi. The requirements for application of a study permit are as follows:

• Complete a three-page application form in duplicate;
• Two recent passport-sized photos;
• Authenticated photocopy of current passport showing photograph and personal details;
• Authenticated photocopy of current visa (where applicable);
• Letter of admission from Kamuzu University of Health Sciences;
• Payment of a processing fee of $100.00 at the Immigration Department;
• Medical report from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences Clinic at a fee of $10, or any recognized health institute within Malawi;
• Police clearance from Student’s country;
• Proof of funding to cover tuition fees, maintenance and incidental costs/Certification of Scholarship;
• Covering letter from the KUHeS Registry to the Immigration Department;

Students are encouraged to carry their passports with them throughout the immigration process and to keep safe the receipts of the processing fee of $100 for future use.

All students are required to register with the Malawi medical council at a fee of $150 for the duration of the program. This can be done upon arrival and after registering as a student for the College.

All students are required to register with the University of Malawi Medical Scheme at a fee of $420 per annum.

All undergraduate generic students are guaranteed accommodation on all University campuses in shared rooms for the duration of their course. The shared rooms include; study table and chair, a bed, wardrobe, toilet and bath-tub. The distance from the residence to the classrooms is approximately 100m. Students are therefore required to apply as soon as admission results are out and have been offered a place to study. Please note that accommodation charges are not covered in tuition fees and are required to be paid on a monthly basis, with at least three months in advance. Rooms are allocated according to availability and seniority. The room charges are as follows:

Hostel with single bed and ensuite bathroom and toilet; $200 per month

Hostel with two beds, sharing ensuite bathroom and toilet; $100 per month

Standard rooms with two beds and communal bathrooms and toilets; $70 per month

Our cafeteria is conveniently situated, surrounded by the hostels, library, classrooms and offices. Delicious meals are served at a reasonable price. Apart from the cafeteria, the COM Sports Complex has a restaurant and snack bar that serve delicious meals and snacks at affordable prices.

Kamuzu University of Health Sciences has a student body called KUHes Students Representative Council whose main role is to be a link between students and the University’s management as well as balancing students’ needs. All students are members of the Council. International students have a representative within the Council who is responsible for their welfare. A fee of $30 per annum is required as payment of affiliation to the Students Representative Council.

Kamuzu University of Health Sciences understands that sports is essential in helping students have a balanced life, with opportunities for recreation as well as study. KUHeS has a Sports Complex that offers a wide range of sporting activities to students from swimming, track and field, squash, tennis, netball, volleyball, to football and a gymnasium. As a High-Performance Centre, the Sports Complex is also used for National and International sports competitions.
