The National Science Scholarship (PhD) supports study at leading overseas institutions for up to five years. ASTAR states that successful full-term scholars complete a one-year research attachment at an ASTAR research institute before starting the PhD. The current second application cycle runs from 1 July to 1 October, with interviews from mid-October to mid-November and outcomes from December. Research areas include biomedical sciences and science and engineering areas such as data, AI and compute, quantum, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and sustainable energy.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be Singaporeans or other nationals intending to take Singapore citizenship; non-Singaporeans must obtain at least Singapore Permanent Resident status before studies and convert to citizenship during the PhD. Applicants need a strong honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and should be in the final semester of undergraduate study or meet A*STAR's mid-term requirements. Full-term scholars must have applied or be applying to a top overseas PhD programme.
