If you have a passion for elder law planning, estate planning, and helping families protect what matters most, we'd love to meet you.

Based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, our legal team has substantial experience planning for families, business owners, farmers, high-net-worth individuals, and seniors. We develop and implement customized estate and asset protection plans designed to facilitate the transfer of wealth, preserve family harmony, and minimize our clients' overall tax burden. Clients know us for sophisticated legal counsel and for responsive, empathetic, approachable service that makes complex legal and financial concepts understandable.

Just as we invest in our clients, we believe in investing in our team. If you are looking for a firm where you are valued, your career can continue to grow, and you are part of a real team, we would like to hear from you!

About the Role

You will work with individuals, families, business owners, and agricultural clients. You'll also work closely with our experienced attorneys in Sioux Falls and continue developing advanced planning skills, but since most mentoring will happen remotely, you should be comfortable handling trusts and core estate planning documents on your own from day one.

Because the office is new, you'll help with business development by building relationships with clients and professional referral partners across the Des Moines, IA area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meet with individuals, families, and farmers to design customized plans.
  • Advise clients on elder law issues such as long-term care and Medicaid planning.
  • Advise clients on special needs planning, guardianships and conservatorships.
  • Handle probate, trust administration, guardianship, and conservatorship matters.
  • Draft wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and related estate planning documents.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys on advanced elder law and Medicaid strategies.
  • Build trusted relationships with clients and professional referral partners.
  • Help build the Johnston office's legal workflow and client service standards.
  • Guide support staff.
  • Stay in close contact with the Sioux Falls team so both offices run consistently.

Requirements

Experience and background:

Required:

  • 1+ years of elder law planning experience, including trusts.
  • Excellent analytical, drafting, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Iowa.
  • Leadership ability and the drive to manage your cases without daily oversight.
  • A desire to build a long-term career.
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to delivering exceptional client service.
  • Strong attention to detail and outstanding organizational abilities.

Preferred:

  • An established professional network in the Des Moines area.
  • Experience with Iowa Medicaid and long-term care planning.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • An attorney role in a new office, with room to grow in leadership and compensation.
  • Work closely with highly accomplished attorneys, including a Board-Certified Elder Law Attorney, while benefiting from hands-on mentorship and supportive leadership.
  • A boutique practice focused exclusively on estate planning, elder law, and business planning.
  • Flexible scheduling options.

Benefits

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $90,000 to $150,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Yearly performance bonus.
  • Firm-paid employee premium on the Wellmark HDHP with HSA (PPO available); Aflac dental and VSP vision.
  • 401(k) through Edward Jones with a 3% employer contribution after one year.
  • Long-term disability through Northwestern Mutual and a dependent care FSA.
  • Cell phone on the firm's business plan.
  • Conscientious unlimited PTO, 10 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, and your birthday afternoon off.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter describing your interest in estate planning, your salary expectations, and why Legacy Law Firm, P.C. would be a great fit for your career goals. We can't wait to hear from you!
