Overview
The British Academy is accepting 2027 Postdoctoral Fellowship applications from eligible early-career humanities and social-science researchers for a three-year award hosted at a UK university or recognised research organisation.
Complete research opportunity details
The fellowship supports an independent research project leading toward significant publishable work while helping the award holder build research and teaching experience. The award is tenable for three years from autumn 2027 at an eligible UK institution. The Academy currently funds 80% of salary costs plus directly allocated and indirect costs under Full Economic Costing.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must work in the humanities or social sciences and be based at an eligible UK university or recognised research organisation for the fellowship. British citizens and EEA nationals are eligible regardless of doctorate location; applicants of any nationality with a doctorate from a UK university are also eligible. Other applicants may qualify through a strong prior association with the UK academic community. The expected viva-completion window is 1 April 2024 to 1 April 2027, and applicants must not have held a permanent academic post in higher education, subject to the scheme's stated exemptions.
Tips for this postdoctoral opportunity
Practical Job and Scholarship guidance. These tips do not replace official rules or create new eligibility requirements.
- Coordinate early with the proposed UK host institution because institutional approval is required by the deadline.
- Confirm viva-date and nationality/UK-association eligibility against the current scheme guidance.
- Match your research background to the project, laboratory, supervisor and required methods rather than applying only from the title.
- Prepare a focused academic CV, transcripts, publications and research statement or proposal when requested by the official call.
- Confirm funding duration, stipend/salary, tuition coverage, start date and eligibility for international applicants.
- Contact a supervisor before applying only when the official instructions recommend or require it.
