The Equality Fund, in partnership with Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) and African Women in Media (AWiM), has launched the inaugural Equality Fund Journalism Fellowship for journalists in ODA-eligible countries.

About The Equality Fund Journalism Fellowship
The fellowship seeks to support fact-based journalism that highlights solutions emerging from local communities in response to global crises.
Journalists will report from their own communities and geographies, bringing stories and solutions into view that can inform decision-makers in public and private settings.
The fellowship will focus on issues including:
- Climate
- Gender-based violence
- Authoritarianism
- Anti-rights movements
- Rollback of sexual and reproductive rights and health
- Economic injustice
- War and conflict
Fellowship Objective
Each journalist fellow will be expected to produce at least one published story reporting on local solutions to global crises, with a focus on gender.
The programme will support journalists working across different platforms, including:
- Text
- Digital
- Video
- Audio
Eligibility
The Equality Fund Journalism Fellowship welcomes applications from women, men and LGBTQI+ people.
Applicants should:
- Be working journalists in an ODA-recipient country.
- Work on any journalism platform, including text, digital, video or audio.
- Report on their own communities and geographies.
- Be either full-time journalists or independent freelance journalists.
As part of the phased application process, shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide a letter of editorial commitment from a news outlet.
In cases involving self-publishing, the editorial commitment may be substituted with a fact-checking plan.
Ai Requirements
Use of AI in the proposal and application is not permitted. Any use of AI during the journalistic process must be disclosed to the programme and approved in advance.
Fellowship Benefits And Support
Successful fellows will receive:
- CAD $4,000 stipend
- Up to CAD $500 for reporting expenses
- Six months of programming
- An additional three months to finalise publication
- Monthly online meetings led by journalists and experts
- Journalism and ethics sessions
- Safety training
- One in-person convening, with travel expenses included
The online programme will feature journalists and experts including Nina Lakhani, a climate journalist with The Guardian and Drilled, and Kelly Kimball, a journalism and ethics professor at CUNY.
Safety training will be provided by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and the Freedom of the Press Foundation.
Fellowship Duration And Timeline
The Equality Fund plans to launch the call for applications in several phases during Fall 2026.
The programme will begin in early 2027, with the fellowship running from January to September 2027.
The programme consists of:
January–June 2027: Six months of fellowship programming Additional three months: Finalisation of publication January–September 2027: Overall fellowship period
The cohort will include up to five journalists.

Tips for this fellowship
