Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Identity Decisioning)

Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Identity Decisioning) based in United States. This senior engineering role will shape the technical direction of backend systems supporting identity decisioning and customer experiences at scale. You will help define year-long technical strategies while connecting engineering priorities to critical, business-impacting initiatives. Working across product, design, analytics, and engineering teams, you will influence architecture, technical standards, operational practices, and execution. The role combines deep backend engineering with technical leadership, system reliability, and talent development. You will work with distributed systems and cloud technologies in a collaborative, global engineering environment. Set the technical strategy for the team over a year-long horizon and connect that strategy to critical projects with meaningful business impact. Partner with product management, design, analytics, and other engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are clearly understood and effectively managed. Act as a force multiplier for the engineering team by defining, communicating, and advocating for scalable technical solutions and effective operational processes. Own the team’s operational health and service availability by establishing appropriate monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing practices, alerting, and on-call processes. Establish and promote high standards for code reviews, system design, engineering quality, and technical ownership within the team and across the broader engineering organization. Communicate technical approaches and engineering standards through written documentation, technical discussions, and talks that help raise engineering quality across teams. Support the growth and development of engineers through ongoing feedback, technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership by example. Drive major technical initiatives, including the delivery of significant system components and the thoughtful deprecation of existing functionality through clear technical and execution plans. Requirements: 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale, using technologies such as Python or Kotlin. Extensive experience building and operating highly available distributed systems, with hands-on experience in technologies such as AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes. Demonstrated ability to lead the technical definition and execution of major features, system components, architectural initiatives, or system deprecations. Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record of writing high-quality, maintainable code that is clear and reusable by other engineers. Ability to work effectively across levels of abstraction, from understanding low-level language behavior and implementation details to designing and reasoning about large-scale system architecture. Demonstrated ability to gather, incorporate, and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers to increase technical impact and effectiveness. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a global engineering organization. Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience. Strong ownership mindset and the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments while balancing technical quality, delivery, reliability, and business priorities.
