The Policy Unit / Wāhanga Kaupapahere is responsible for providing emergency management related policy advice to government. This includes stewardship of the emergency management framework, including secondary legislation under the new Emergency Management Act 2026. The Policy Unit also provides policy advice to internal NEMA stakeholders. The purpose of the Coordinator, Policy position is to provide:efficient and effective coordination and support for NEMA's Policy Unit to ensure the smooth development and delivery of policy productsproject coordinator support to key policy projects and programmessupport in communication and engagement of the policy work programme to internal and external stakeholdersAs NEMA is an operational agency, there may be a requirement to respond to emergency activations in the event of a national emergency response. This may include potentially long hours and challenging working conditions, e.g. an emergency could occur at any time of the day or night and may require working shifts and/or working weekends. NEMA provides thorough training prior to you being required to assist in a response. NEMA will do all in its power to support staff in meeting their work and family responsibilities during an emergency. The welfare and wellbeing of our staff is of utmost importance. Ko wai koe | About youWe are looking for a candidate with the following skills/experience:EssentialExperience administering products and processes associated with government policy, machinery of government, and the provision of Ministerial adviceExperience supporting senior managers and providing support to projects and programmes of work, including initial development of project plansCapability in project scheduling and trackingExcellent interpersonal skills, can deal appropriately with a wide range of staff and stakeholdersExcellent secretariat, administration, organisational and process management skillsDesirableKnowledge and experience of programme and project managementStrong writing and presentation skillsExcellent written capability to present complex ideas in an easily understood format Due to the nature of our role in Emergency Management, NEMA has a very dynamic work environment and as a small agency, staff are often required to pivot and change focus on their work at short notice. Attributes of adaptability, agility, resilience and curiosity are all required on a daily basis, in and out of times of emergency response.
