Full Job Description

Utrecht University is home to many open-minded and independent-minded people, and I feel right at home amongst them. What makes my work so enjoyable is the contact with so many different people, all of whom are equally passionate about their work, from cleaners to directors.

I began my career in a research group within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. I soon became interested in what was happening outside my own group, as well as the wider developments at Utrecht University.

I seized the opportunity to do a course with both hands

I seized the opportunity to do a course with both hands

When a vacancy arose for an occupational health and safety and environmental coordinator, I decided to apply. Although no additional training was required for this role, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine offered me the opportunity to study the post-HBO course in Occupational Hygiene alongside my work. I seized that opportunity with both hands. I later progressed to the role of Safety Team Leader.

Within Utrecht University, I am part of a broad network of colleagues in the same role. Together, we discuss case studies and keep up to date with changes in legislation and regulations. Utrecht University also gives us every opportunity to attend conferences a few times a year to keep our knowledge up to date. I greatly appreciate this opportunity to continue developing my skills.

No two days are the same

No two days are the same

The unique working environment at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine makes my job even more special: with our own farm, an animal hospital, laboratories, offices, a pathology department and extensive teaching facilities, no two days are the same.

Fortunately, my colleagues see me as someone they can turn to for help and advice, rather than as a police officer who’s just there to check whether they’re doing things properly. We assess the risks and work together to find a (workable) solution that allows us to work safely and healthily. It gives me great satisfaction when the penny drops and people realise just how important this is for ensuring they can retire in good health.

Ruud Eerland is the Safety Team Leader at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Together with his team, he ensures that colleagues can work safely and healthily.
