Fellows pursue oceanography research and may collaborate through Operation UMI with OIST, the University of Hawaiʻi and Hokkaido University. Example topics include typhoon-ocean interactions, hydrothermal vents and seabed resources, and Kuroshio/coral-reef systems, while broader oceanography proposals are welcomed. The initial appointment is expected to be two years with a possible one-year extension.

A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree is required for the listed appointment categories; appointment level depends on experience, scientific leadership and expected responsibilities.
